Rob Stafford (Zielinski) and Mick Doherty on youtube

Rob Stafford (Zielinski) and Mick Doherty on youtube

Some members here will have played in sessions with Rob Stafford in Ireland, the UK, Australia or even the US. Rob's been back in Australia these last few years recovering from a serious bowing arm injury, and has recently started playing gigs again, as well as recording. He has changed his surname back to the family's original "Zielinski". With Rob's permission I've put a couple of tracks on youtube, and I'd appreciate any feedback about the tunes, the playing or the recording quality.

One of the tracks is Rob playing with his long-time teacher Mick Doherty, nephew of Johnny Doherty of Ardara. This is probably the first time Mick’s playing has been accessible on the net. Hopefully there'll soon be more of Mick's playing available when recent recordings are compiled into a CD - including some very old Donegal and Doherty family tunes and variations.

They are all on my youtube channel – http://www.youtube.com/user/martinmcmutrie

Mick Doherty and Rob Zielinski - Wheels of the World

The first two are studio recordings. The last with Mick was recorded on a ZOOM H4n in his backyard shed.

Cheers

Re: Rob Stafford (Zielinski) and Mick Doherty on youtube

I love the track with Mick Doherty. I definitely prefer my fiddle music to be a bit rougher around the edges. The playing in the other two is very good, and he's clearly a very good player, but it sounds too sweet and clean for my taste - that may have something to do with the production, but it would be nice to hear him let rip and get a bit closer to the edge of his abilities.

Good one DR - thanks. I know what you mean, and I think Rob prefers the grittier recordings with Mick as well. There's some great 'octave' duet playing they've recorded - what I'm told is a very old Donegal style. Mick is in his late eighties now, and has been in poor health for quite a while, including removing the end of his bowing index finger with a band-saw last year! He can still pull out some wild Donegal playing though.

Thanks for that Martin, I only met Rob during his recovery period and didn't appreciate what a great player he was until recently.
