Hi all. I've just started a sort of tune diary/blog over at boxwoodandbrass.com. A few times a week, I'll be recording a tune I've been playing on the border pipes and offering it up alongside a bit of chat about the tune and what I'm doing with it. Obviously, the tunes will be mostly Scottish, though a fair bit of Irish material will probably make its way on as well.
The sound quality is a bit rough and the tunes aren't going to be perfectly polished cd pieces, but that's sort of the point, and I figured some of you might be interested. Check it out and let me know if there's anything you'd like to hear me do.
Finally, I should give credit to Harry Bradley's lovely uilleann piping blog at errantelbows.com, as this was the inspiration for my site.
Hey, Will, I've been puttin' around on the internet thelast couple days thinking about bagpipes and i was wondering what the difference is between border pipes and scottish small pipes, if there is a difference. Are they different or are they the same thing? Thanks and good luck on your blog!
Smallpipes have more or less straight, cylindrical bore and play an octave lower than the border pipes, which have a conical bore. Generally speaking, border pipes are louder and closer in tone to Highland pipes while smallpipes are quieter and have a distinctly smallpipey tone. Just have a look at Allan MacDonald playing his smallpipes in this video:

and compare it to the sound of my pipes--the difference is pretty distinct, I think.
