Try B. Parkin's MID2ABC (ver 2.0.02), it's pretty good. I found it in a Google search and downloaded it. It will cope with complex multi-voiced MIDI as well as straightforward monophonic, which most Irish trad tunes are.

Good advice - in theory. But unfortunately not everyone has the ability to easily make the mental conversion from the sound to ABC or dots. It can be done by most people, of course, but takes time to learn how to do it, and perhaps too long for some. Which is why we should be grateful fot the "crutches" provided by Mr Parkin and others.
It's also worth pointing out that Mr Parkin's program deals quite happily with polyphonic midi works. While mentally converting monophonic tunes to ABC or dots is within the capabilities of most people, converting polyphonic stuff is a different order of difficulty entirely. Mozart could do it, but then he was Mozart.
