Scottish Concertina expert Stuart, over on Footstompin, has just informed us that it is either German or possibly English & pointed out that retailers often labelled the instruments they bought in.
So I reckon that's solved this particular mystery.
A logical design, less likely to roll. Thanks for sharing the photo. I'd love to see it up close and intimate, including inside. When you discover a triangular one let me know...
Square Concertina?
Square Concertina?
Just wondering if anyone here has seen a square Concertina like this one, on their travels around Ireland?
It's coming up at an auction in Scotland on Saturday and is described as a "Scottish concertina" with a label; W Mitchell, Wishaw."

The auction is being held at Great Western Auctions, Dumbarton Rd in Glasgow, which is run by Anita Manning, who's on Bargain Hunt now and again.
Lot No. 412:

From the layout I'd guess it's either an Anglo or a Duet ...?
Cheers

Re: Square Concertina?
It's almost like a bandoneon! That flute looks interesting too.

It would have to be the phonfiddle for me and I've always wanted a brass microscope (to study my hpt water collection more closely).

Re: Square Concertina?
erm...'hpt water' should be of course, 'hot water'.

Re: Square Concertina?
The fact that is has (presumably) only 24 playing keys leads me to believe that the square concertina in the auction is an Anglo.
Also, an air release button is usual on an Anglo, but rare - (although not unknown) - on a duet.

Re: Square Concertina?
Texas-based Harold Herrington has made square concertinas. Check him out on concertina.net.

Re: Square Concertina?
Well it looks like this one dates from about 1870, so of course it's not exactly a new idea!

Re: Square Concertina?
Bob Tedrow builds square concertinas
http://hmi.homewood.net/square/
He also posted Twitter photos about 18 months ago of reproducing two old "square" concertinas similar to the one in the auction.

Re: Square Concertina?
The Cheminitzers are a thing to behold. Big and square and technically a concertina
I have no clue how anyone can play those things. Maybe that's why the Germans like them so much. Best played associated with copious amounts of beer
