Anyone heard of these instruments?

Anyone heard of these instruments?

There is a Frenchman plays uilleann pipes,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6JZ2Dulge8&feature=related
and also the Accordina,
http://www.accordinas.com
which I've never heard of before. Apparently there are only two manufacturers, both in France. It struck me that it might be of interest to box-players as a sort of portable practise-cum-convenience instrument; but I would be grateful for any information from anyone who has heard or played one.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

Has similarities with the melodica. Accordions that reflect what you've had for dinner.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

The accordina sounds MUCH better than a melodica - it has tremolo reeds of far higher quality. Really interesting instrument. Probably more use for tango or klezmer than Irish music, though.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

Do you suck it AND blow it?

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

accordina is just accordian with the letters switched round a bit. harmoniac would also be a good name for it

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

...except that it's not spelled that way.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

You only blow it. There was once a suck-blow bisonoric melodica-like instrument, the Mouth Flutina.

http://www.campin.me.uk/Music/MouthFlutina/

I've never seen one and I doubt it was in anything like the same league as the accordina.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

You're right Gam, but 'accordion' is probably spelled (spelt) 'accordian' in some languages ?
I'd like to try an accordina though. sound reminds me of a chromatic harmonica when played in a jazzy sort of style.

I'm afraid accordian belongs to the same language category as bazooki and illean pipes.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

No parlez, but if I get the gist of what is said on the link, there's probably a good reason this instrument hasn't been much seen. I think the description claims that it is an instrument from the 1930s that was played by someone named A. Borel (in picture on link), and that this company is "reprising" or creating reproductions of the instrument. (Anyone with an interest can use Google or Babelfish to translate web pages into English by simply copying the web page address and pasting into the right spot on the Google or Babelfish translator page to read the whole French web page in English.)

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

Borel was the original maker, Arthur. There is someone making wooden ones here --

http://www.boite-accordeon.com

They have been adopted by the jazz fraternity, so it would seem that they are more than just a novelty toy.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

yore rite of corse Janek. I was takeing libertys wit de speling...

They're a bit expensive for a novelty toy. Presumably they'd need to be cheaper if accordion players were to use them as a more portable/backup instrument.

Re: Anyone heard of these instruments?

If my schoolboy french is correct--

PRODUCT FEATURES:
Number of voices: one voice, flute
Reeds handmade stainless steel
Range: 44 notes, F2 to C6 or 3-1/2 octaves
Italian fingering, but any other diatonic scale is possible
Finish: walnut, cherry, chestnut, ash, or white ash with tinted finish to choose from: black, blue, red.
The accordina may also be made by special order in precious woods (ebony, cocobolo, rosewood ...)

Maybe I could take the chanter out of my pipes and fit a connector :)

--I'd have to learn to play it first though :(
