My favorites to play right now are The Didda, which is listed on here as a reel (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3783), but I've only ever heard it as played by Liz Carroll as an air;
and Neil Gow's great lament Farewell to Whisky, which is tragically/blasphemously played by us Irish musicians as a polka. I think the original was actually written in either A-flat or B-flat, but most folks play in G, no matter what the style/speed... there's a pretty good version of it in G here: http://www.nigelgatherer.com/tunes/tab/tab2/farew.html
Maisie, it's difficult to pick up airs and the like from the notes posted on sites like this. Usually because it's hard to notate them and get them to fit a regular rhythm - which is required for submitting tunes here.
You really do need to find a few recordings and whilst you might use the notes as an aid, generally you need to use your ears and follow what you hear on the recording as best you can.
and have played it during the Offertory at church (Catholic). I've also used Joanie Madden's Hills of New Zealand and Brian Finnegan's Last of the Starrs in the same setting. Well received in each case.
On a similar note, anything slow and haunting (perhaps even a bit eerie), for Autumn? Alternately, something that captures the tone of the season (summer's end, winter coming, harvest over, and a long pause before the worst begins...)

Ned of the Hill is my favorite, sets well on a flute or whistle.

Re: looking for nice slow air to play on flute
well, there is always Absent Friends, it takes a bit of transposing, but it's a wonderful tune.

I heard that the Skye boat song was a good one, but I personally don't care much for that one. Have you tried Inisheer?

Re: looking for nice slow air to play on flute
Maisie, is this for your own entertainment or for a specific event or use. I think Easter Snow works well for flute:

and have played it during the Offertory at church (Catholic). I've also used Joanie Madden's Hills of New Zealand and Brian Finnegan's Last of the Starrs in the same setting. Well received in each case.
