We're really nervous about it in Australia.

Re: Will this effect your session?

Hmm. I was reading an Internet article today or yesterday, saying that one was about to blow and start a chain reaction leading to a slice of an island falling into the sea and sending a bloody great tidal wave towards the Eastern States. I forget which website it was on and whether the volcano had already started to be active when the article was written.

It said it would happen in a week or so. Well, we'll soon know if the guy was right or not.

Re: Will this effect your session?

It Might do Nicholas, not 'it will' Northern command are reputedly well aware and scuttling about . This has happened a few times but not for 30,000 yrs or so I gather.

Its been rumbling since August, thousands of earthquakes, 4.6 a couple of days ago, now its red alert and evacuation as the volcano is erupting underwater at the moment.

As regards the mega Tsunami theory; this lot are not impressed.

Re: Will this effect your session?

I like the range of predictions on this one.

"Great boost to the local economy from volcano tourism" to "apocalyptic civilization-breaking catastrophe".

My guess: lotsa dead fish.

Re: Will this effect your session?

As far as I can make out, the only connection, and a tenuous one at that, that this thread may have with the music of Ireland is that the mathematical analysis of earthquakes eventually resulted in the ubiquitous AutoTune (which I sincerely hope no-one here even dreams of using!).

Re: Will this effect your session?

There used to be a session close enough by in Lanzarote and they sometimes still happen from what I hear. When I lived there we would have went on a session if we heard the place was going to blow.

Re: Will this effect your session?

Not at all Trevor, as i said above it s very likely directly affect a session I just organised though obviously I hope it wont so I wonder how /if it might effect yours? People say no effect, but a big cloud of |Ash can have a big effect as it did last year.
Any stories of being caught out at a session by crazy weather or tornados? volcanos.

If Yellowstone blows, that will definitely affect our session.

Re: Will this effect your session?

The last time an Icelandic volcano erupted enough to create an air travel band over the UK, the skies were clearer than they had ever been - and quieter! I'm assuming the clear skies were the result of no aircraft trails gradually dispersing and forming a thin cloud cover. I'm surprised at how different it was for those few days.

Re: Will this effect your session?

Oops - typo - "...ban".

"Air travel band..." is just a noisier version!

Re: Will this effect your session?

A repeat of the 1607 Bristol Channel tsunami might cause a few problems with sessions in South Wales and and also in the English counties of Devon, Somerset and Gloucestershire.

I just hope our session venue does not get washed away !

This link shows a dramatic effect from volcanic ash, notice the 1991 volcano and the link with climate.

Re: Will this effect your session?

Some of the best things about London are the (current!) lack of:
volcanoes
earthquakes/ threat of tsunami
hurricanes (typhoons, cyclones)
tornadoes
extreme hot dry sunny weather
extreme wet weather/ thunderstorms
extreme cold/ snowy weather
seriously poisonous arthropods/ invertebrates/ fish/ reptiles
seriously poisonous plants
famine
serious diseases
civil war
violent revolution
seriously oppressive government/ regime

Re: Will this effect your session?

I'm perplexed. Some months ago I submitted a question about sessions (couldn't find the answer in the Sessions section) and it was deleted immediately.

How is it that we can have discussions about volcanoes, home brewing and football and they're not touched!

# Posted on October 13th 2011 by amhrán

Re: Will this effect your session?

Well the volcano is taking place 100km from a session I just organised, so Im concerned, its also an issue that, in the light of Katla, can effect us all severely, just as the economy has a direct effect on sessions so do natural 'events'.
The thread also invites session stories regarding wild weather or untowards events.
Ive no idea why your post was deleted and Im sorry to hear it but we are guests and its up to the host to set the ground rules. this thread could easily vanish today anyhow :-) who knows.

Krakatoas sister started a week ago Hup and Nicholas, your tune idea is a nice idea.

Re: Will this effect your session?

Amhran - I know what you mean. There isn't much rhyme or reason sometimes. The gardener can be quite random with his pruning. I asked about finding musicians and sessions in Belgrade and it too was deleted immediately. Perhaps if I'd have asked about volcanos

Re: Will this effect your session?

Some aspects of life seem to be regarded as inevitable add-ons to a sessioner's life, others do not.

In the first category are scrapes with animals, off-road vehicles and bar staff; fearful misadventures on smallish mountainsides and bits of water; injuries incurred in DIY, low-grade sport and handling home brew in bulk; and more damage and disaster than all of the foregoing, incurred or inflicted in the ongoing business of trying to find the perfect instrument or take it round the world. Extreme weather events nestle easily under the wing of these dolours, as do aliens, prehistoric wisdom, 'Celtic' studies and cryptofauna.

In the second category come riches, fast smooth vehicles of any kind, the mass marketing of junk instruments, work as election agents, arms lobbying in teetotal states, and high office in the big banks. To these may dubitably be added the manufacture and consumption of alcopops, the distribution of horse tranquillisers to revellers and the hacking of top-notch missile computers. There are things most sessioners can't do. There are things many sessioners wouldn't want to do. But there are things a lot of sessioners *could* do...

Is cryptofauna what you encounter when you finally decide that you really must clean out your flute?

More likely to be cryptoflora! (Mould, moss, fungi...)
