6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

A 40 year old two row Paolo Soprani has just come on stream on DoneDeal.ie. The seller is asking for 6000 euro. At today's rate that's around 7,961 dollars or 5,200 sterling.
I'm in shock...or is there something I've missed. Comments invited.

"The seller is asking for 6000 euro..."

Did he say to bring it in a wheelbarrow?

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

One went on ebay a few weeks ago for around 9k euro!

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

Obviously the price must have been legitimate. There seems to have been a buyer willin to pay.

I have seen piano accordions at prices like $27,000 which should be in the low 20K Euro range.

Herself would never speak to me again if I brought something like that home......

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

6k to 9k for even an old grey paolo would be huge money.
Couldn't see myself paying that money for a 50/60's red.

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

I'm not familiar with Donedeal, but it appears to be a small ads listing site, not an auction. In which case the instrument probably isn't sold at all. It will appear again on Ebay in a couple of weeks time, with a slightly different description and photo, priced at 5,000, and with the seller saying "look, a similar one just sold for 6,000".

If it is legitimate, it seems that it sold within 18 hours of the ad appearing, which is pretty remarkable. I don't know many people who make that sort of decision that quickly.

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

Donedeal is a good website....Like you said, a small ads listing.

Ive sold a few things on there and bought some also, though never instruments.
People will snap these up when they do come up for sale, dosent suprise me at all that it sold so fast.

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

Yes i see the instrument is now shown as SOLD. I'm keeping an open mind on this one. I'm inclined to agree with Skreech..
Done Deal started about two or three years ago and since then I've watched numerous accordions being sold on there including similar Paolo Sopranis. I think the highest asking price I've seen on there for a similar box was £2500. A friend of mine bought a 1960s Paolo 9 Coupler last year (Done Deal) He did some haggling and got it for £1500
In 1965 I bought the exact same type Paolo that was advertised at €6000 for £63. (Should have kept it)
Incidentally the Paolo that made the big bucks on eBay recently was a late 1940s model (metal grid)

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

If you were looking for hindsight investment value, spending your £63 on IBM stock would have likely been the better investment than an accordion... :)

My impression (from talking to the accordion players I know) is that the 9-coupler boxes aren't nearly as desirable as the 2-coupler Paolos ("Too many options, and none of them good enough" was what one fellow said). 6K does seem high, but not unreasonably so... After all, year after year there are fewer and fewer of those instruments available, and (with the exception of the Briggs boxes), none of the modern instruments seem to have the same rich warmth that the old Paolos do.

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

BTW Incidentally the paolo that made the big bucks was an early 1940s model that is very rare. Not like the regular grey box and if you know your grey boxes you will know why.
That kind of money for a red box is mad. I have played many greys and they are amazing. Red boxes just don't ring. They reach a certain volume and cant go beyond. Greys can hit the volume and keep on going and going. They are the ultimate box and are completely worthy of the holy grail status they have earned.

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

Hi all, sorry for butting in. I'm just trying to find information on a Paolo Soprani. I'm in Ireland, don't know where I would find someone to look at it. I haven't a clue about accordions but have one in my possesion. It's blue with a metal grid with two rows of buttons. It's seems in reasonably good condition and is titled Comm Paolo Soprani e Figli, Castlefidardo, Italia. Seems basic compared to the other accordions that I've seen on net. Was bought in Rollins in Belfast. From what I can find out, the shop was going in the 1930's. Basically it's sitting here for years and I don't know if it'd be worth selling or would any one want it. Thanks for any replies.

Re: 6000 euro for a Paolo Soprani....????

The old grey sopranis are worth that much as far as I know. I met a fella the other day, a good box player, and he had a green (green!) soprani and he was looking for €6000 but in fairness I did hear that they're a good box.
