tips for great irish music places on the south/west/east area...!

Hello!
I'm going to Ireland on saturday for a week, arrinving in cork and going back from Dublin.
I play irish music for few years now (concertina) and hope to find great sessions during my holiday, but do not know the south west of Ireland nor Dublin area...
What are the best pubs/ cities in thoses area not to miss for the music (I guess there is a lot) and I'm travelling by buses...
It will give me idea of where to go!!! (I didn't plan anything for the moment...!)

Thank you so much for your tips!
Laure

"The Lee Sessions" will tell you everything you need to know about trad music in Cork. Very up to date as well. Sine in Cork is pretty good, but a but wild (sessions Tuesday, Friday, Sundays). Tuesdays have lots of tunes in D minor & F (great banjo and fiddle players run the session, but I can't really join in too much on flute). Fridays and Sundays also have the occasionally balkan or oldtime tune thrown in.

The Corner House (right next door to Sine) has sessions Tuesdays, Wednesdays and the first Friday of every month. Repertoire is more standard traditional tunes, except for on Fridays were loads of Sliabh Luachra music is played (about 40% slides and polkas).

Gables is also nice, but usually very quiet (2-3 musicians). Session on Wednesdays and Sunday nights.

Have fun! Might see you around.

Re: tips for great irish music places on the south/west/east area...!

That's a fairly big area - I assume you mean everywhere except the North. If you're in North Connaught, there's Spell's in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Although I've only been there around the time of the Joe Mooney Summer School, I believe that there is a fair bit of music around Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim, throughout the year - although that might be too far north for you. But if you're in that neck of the woods, The Coleman Centre in Goirtín, Co. Sligo is not far away - and Cryan's in Carrick-on-Shannon.

In the East, there's a wealth of music in Dublin. I don't know the scene that well, but the place I always head (more as a listener than a player - although I was once scolded by Catherine McEvoy for not taking my instrument out of its case) for the Cobblestone. Once, en route cycling from Dublin to Leitrim, I passed though Trim, Co. Meath (on a Sunday night, I think) and stumbled upon a great little session in Brogans http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/1396 - lovely music and very warm and welcoming.

If you're in Clare, in addition to Milltown and Doolin (where you'll find music several times a week), there are also regular sessions in Lahinch (The Cornerstone), Ennistymon (Daly's - and others), Lisdoonvarna (The Roadside Tavern), St. Brigid's Well (village and eponymous pub) and Liscannor (McHugh's), at least one night a week. I don't know East Clare so well, but Feakle has regular sessions in Pepper's and Lena's (Weds and Thu respectively). Ennis, of course, has lots of sessions going, and Kilrush would have a few a week.

In Limerick City, Dolan's and Nancy Blake's have sessions several times a week.

Re: tips for great irish music places on the south/west/east area...!

Laure,

Good luck with your holiday, but do be aware that 1) there are far fewer buses in rural Ireland in October than there are are in the summer, and 2) many sessions in Ireland's rural parts don't operate beyond the end of September.

As such, here's a suggested itinerary that should get you some good music.

I don't know what time you'll be arriving in Cork, but my advice would be to forget about the city completely - from experience there are few sessions there at the weekend.

Instead get the bus (every 25 minutes past the hour (7.25am-6.25pm) from the bus station at Parnell Place in Cork to Ennis. It's a three-hour journey, but it'll take you much closer to sessions you'll enjoy.

The Rowan Tree Hostel in Ennis is a good place to base yourself for the weekend - http://www.rowantreehostel.ie/home.php - and there's a choice of sessions in the town on both Saturday and Sunday nights.

On Monday get the bus from Ennis to Doolin (10.25 am). There are several hostels in Doolin, but, unfortunately, at this time of year there's no way you can stop off at the Cliffs of Moher (and then catch a later bus to Doolin) unless you're prepared to hitch the rest of the way. Doolin's very touristy but you might strike lucky at one of the pubs or hotel bars.

Tuesday morning there's a bus at 8.45 am from Doolin (and another at 1.45 pm) direct to Galway. You'll find plenty of sessions there on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

On Thursday head to Dublin. Personal session favourites are The Cobblestone and Hughes's, but there are plenty of alternatives listed here.

Waou!
Thank you so much for your advices!
I'll arrive in Cork tomorrow (can't wait!) for the week end. I might go to county Clar in fact (already been to ennis for the fleadh last year, had a grat time overthere! so why not again) and doolin sounds good, and well, in fact everywhere actually!!

See you in sessions next weeks!
Thanks a million
Laure
