Re: Is this a Strathspey ?

Sounds good Jim, think I'll pinch it.
It sounds a bit sad for a Strathspey, but maybe that's just the way you are playing it
No long knives needed, but I did a little whittling --

Re: Is this a Strathspey ?

Sounds like a Strathspey to me. Your abc looks consistent in terms of beats per bar, as far as I can tell, but it is not quite the conventional way to notate a strathspey - all your note values are doubled in length. Also, one or two notes do not correspond exactly to your playing. I would write it thus:

X:1
T:To My Dear Departed Friend's
C:Jim McAuley
R:Strathspey
M:4/4
L:1/8
K:A
(3EFG |: A2 c<A G2 B<G | F<A F<A E2 E/F/-G|
A2 c<A G2 B<G |1 A<c B<d A2 E/F/G:|2 A<c B<c A2 A/B/c/d/ ||
e2 a<e d2 a<e | c<e c<d c2 A/B/c/d/ |
e2 a<e d2 a<e | c<e B<c A2 A>B |
e2 a<e|d2 a<e | c<e B<d | c2 B2 |
(3ABc (3Bcd (3cde (3def | (3ecA (3EFG A2 ||

What you have written as two quavers and a crotchet (or two semiquavers and a quaver, when the values are halved) sound more like triplets to me in your recording; conversely, what you have written as a triplet tied to a crotchet sounds to me like a run of semiquavers. (Although, perhaps your notated version corresponds more to how it might be played in a N.E. Scottish style). I could also not see the need for the rests you had put in. I apologize if I have ironed out any important nuances.

One more small detail: In your playing of bar 4, one note is different from in bar 5 (the repeat bar) - D instead of C#. I have written it as played, but I am aware that this may have been a spontaneous variation, as you do not play it this way on the 2nd time round. There are a few other odd notes here and there that differ from one repeat to the next.

Re: Is this a Strathspey ?

...I forgot to change E/F/-G to (3EFG at the end of bar 2.

BTW, this tune grows on me every time I listen to it.

"It sounds a bit sad for a Strathspey"

Strathspeys don't have to be cheerful. If you include slow strathpeys, some of them are positively maudlin. This one certainly has something bittersweet about it.

Re: Is this a Strathspey ?

I like it Jim. Might pick that one up if you don't mind :)

Re: Is this a Strathspey ?

It doesn't sound exactly like a strathspey to me - the rhythm of a dancing strathspey usually has bits that go A<AA>A and A>AA<A, yours just has reverse snaps all through.

What it does sound like is a kind of slow strathspey that Scott Skinner called a "pastoral" and used as a listening tune. These are usually played a bit slower with more ornamentation and dynamic contrast, though.

I reckon you ought to keep playing it a lot and see what it wants to be when it grows up.

Nice way of putting it Jack. I'll pinch that as well.

Re: Is this a Strathspey ?

Thank's I listen to those Both abc's on my Navigator - Both far better than mine...
1st one more like a Strathspey than mine, 2nd more like how I am playing it. I have been asked for the music by a local friend and thesession member for the Abc of this tune..

* Brian,, Don't use mine at the top - lol..

I was thinking about lose friends musical and otherwise... Then I started thinking about lost Pets I had 2 Dog's 1 Cat and a wee Cockatiel.
And how I missed them still -- And that's when I wrote this tune .
