Re: here's a real toe tapper

It was a bit awkward untill the dancing started... then I laughed so hard I nearly lost a lung.

Re: here's a real toe tapper

Oh Mo Dhia!!! - After seeing the transfixed manic grins on the musicians faces (and this is from pre-botox days) I will never again bemoan the solemn expressions worn by so many of our musicians :-)

Re: here's a real toe tapper

What about the syrupy smiles of the Transatlantic Sessions musos discussed earlier? They pale in comparison with the manic grins of this lot. Perhaps it's the iron-enriched blood. Or maybe just the happy look worn by any musician who knows he's getting paid.

Re: here's a real toe tapper

Does anyone know where I can hear some more of this Irish music?

Re: here's a real toe tapper

Well may you titter, but the accordionist featured playing the Stack of Barley was none other than Myron Floren. One of the top accordionists of his time..

Re: here's a real toe tapper

I thought it was the look of musicians who were expecting there sheet music to blow away the way their neighbour's had just gone

Re: here's a real toe tapper

Myron used to be a regular at the Great Frederick Fair here in central Maryland. He always filled the stands, though I never personally attended his show. The weekly lineup went something like this:George Jones, Grandpa Jones, Tractor Pull, Demolition Derby,Myron Floren, the Statler Brothers....those were the days....I really don't miss em...except for Grandpa.

Re: here's a real toe tapper

Yup, Myron was one of the greats of the Piano Accordion world.

Actually, there were plenty of good musicians in the Welk band. The arrangements and presentation might not be to most folks' liking these days, but you can't say the players didn't have chops.

Re: here's a real toe tapper

I quite enjoyed it actually. I'd like to hear more musical hybrids. Other than the usual Horslips, Thin Lizzie, The Pogues that we are used to hearing these days.

Re: here's a real toe tapper

And anyway, it's not so far removed from the staccato rhythmic style The Flannagan Brothers played. And if Joe Cooley said the Flannagans were great, who am I to argue?

This made my day!

Re: here's a real toe tapper

Wow. All I can think to say is, there's got to be a joke that starts off: "How many clarinets does it take to play Irish music?"

Re: here's a real toe tapper

I saw Myron Floren not long before he died. He always did a benefit for a music camp, giving all the proceeds to the camp. He was also known to show up to the town he was playing in several days in advance. He would go to the nursing homes and play for the folks there. He was a great guy.
