Re: Jim Murray - only guitarists need read this one
I peeked anyway.
Sounds very interesting, double dropped D.
In theory, everthing is a trade-off, so I wonder what is lost for the gains.
Ie, how strong are the "strong" keys, how weakened are the "weak" keys, are you doomed to be missing a turn while sliding a capo about, etc.
(The lsat one I watched done by the backer for a noted piper, and it seemed rather grim, watching him stop and desperately slide his cheater up and down the neck.)
The best thing might be to see Mr. Murray perform live as an accompanist, and watch him following through an assortment of tunes with some siognificant changes thrown in.
Re: Jim Murray - only guitarists need read this one
I think one of the good things is you can just pay the minimum and check it out for one month and if you feel that there's enough to keep you going then subscribe for longer. Buy a DVD and you might look at it once but how many times will you go back to it.
Double Drop D (DDD) isn't my thing but it certainly works for Jim himself and for some others. Its close enough to DADGAD and Drop D to be full of useful things for both styles.
Re: Jim Murray - only guitarists need read this one
It is excellent
I don't think he puts enough emphasis in jig tempo on the first and fourth beat, in my opinion he is not lengthening the first and fourth beats in a jig sufficiently, if one listens to Comhaltas piano ceili accompaniment the emphasis is generally much stronger.
Re: Jim Murray - only guitarists need read this one
I think he's a great player, busy but never intrusive. I could listen to him all night. and the samples look very tempting.

Ceili band accompaniment is a very different animal to session accompaniment, a different tradition almost!

Donough this looks pretty interesting... might take a look for myself just to learn some new chops.
Brendyn is a fine flute player also... makes for a good mix.

Jim is dead sound, and a great guitar player for trad. He's been around the block with some of the best players, and he's a very approachable guy.
If you're in the market for guitar lessons to accompany trad, I think you'd be in good hands.

Looks very good.
For those who have bad guitarist experiences at sessions, please direct the offenders to Jim's website!

molaoch:

Good music, but I missed the examples of key changes, G, Em, C, D, Am, etc.
I shall listen again....
