Yesterday, I bought Danny O' Mahonys latest CD (In retrospect) to see what it was like. I'm still listening to it it's great!
But, what I'm asking, can anyone recommend some CD's for me to get? I'm thinking of collecting more CD's. So I'd appreciate a list of CD's you like or whatever. Preferably solo instrument based CD's like a Fiddle Player or whatever. But I'm open to suggestions of any CD's of bands too or whatever. Just look through CD's you've listened to and I'll see I'll be up and down to Powells in Galway quite often so I can take a look :p
Dick Gaughan - Handful of Earth - Singer
Joe Cooley - Cooley - Accordion
Noel Hill and Tony McMahon - I gCnoc na Grai
and i'd second conal o'grada's cd mentioned above. In fact it's so good I'd nearly buy two of 'em
I would also highly recommend Steph Geremia's CD which Kenny refers to above. One of the best flute (or any other instrument) CDs I have heard in a long time.
My favorite new CD is Na Fir Bolg, by Jack Talty and Cormac Begley. Absolutely beautiful solo concertina duos with no accompanyment.
I have that Peoples one on vinyl, Patrick. Like a lot of his recordings, it's a bit blighted at times by, er, not the best accompaniment ever. I bought my copy from Collet's basement music shop in the early 80s.
I love The Quiet Glen, and was taken aback when a good mate of mine and accomplished fiddle player utterly rejected it on the grounds of what he called Tommy's "bad temperament." Discuss! I hasten to add that I virulently disagreed with him, though it's clear when you listen what he's referring to.
The solo album that really got me playing this music is an old one by Jackie Daly called Music From Sliabh Luachra Vol. 6. It's mostly accordeon (his spelling) with a good smattering of anglo concertina and there are no accompanists whatsoever.
I had that one. Impressive playing of The Banks Of Sullane (air) in A Major, going an octave down for the last time through. I found it possible to play this tune in the same way, in the same key, on the floppy little Hohner DG melodeon I had at the time.
Patrick,
If you ever get the chance, get to see Danny O'Mahony live in a non contaminated session, Danny live, is like a cross between the drive of Joe Cooley and the flair of Finbarr Dwyer.
Some of my favorites of recent years:
Angelina Carberry - An Traidisiun Beo
Angelina Carberry & Martin Quinn - self-titled
Breda Keville - The Hop Down
Dympna O'Sullivan - Cairde Cairdin
Edel Fox - Chords and Beryls
Johnny Connolly - An Mileoidean Scaoilte
Johnny McCarthy - Solo Run
Kane Sisters - Side By Side
Kitty Hayes & Peter Laban - They'll Be Good Yet
Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly - The Living Stream
Mike Rafferty & Willie Kelly - The New Broom
Mike Rafferty - Speed 78
NicGaviskey - Home Away From Home
Paddy O'Donoghue, Seamus Bugler, Pat Mullins & Pat Costelloe - Life in the Slow Lane
Peter Carberry - Traditional Irish Music From Co. Longford
Various - Rogha Scoil Shamhraih Willie Clancy (live recordings from each of the past several years)
I have to agree with a lot of what has been said already but I would like to add:
Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill- Live in Seattle (or either of their other albums this one is my favorite).
Mick O'Brien and Caoimhin O Raghallaigh- Kitty Lie Over and/or Deadly Buzz
Tommy Peoples- Waiting for a Call
Kevin Burke - If the Cap Fits...
"I had that one. Impressive playing of The Banks Of Sullane (air) in A Major, going an octave down for the last time through. I found it possible to play this tune in the same way, in the same key, on the floppy little Hohner DG melodeon I had at the time."
You can do it either on a D or an A harmonica, but you'll need better than a ten-hole job (or my talent) to do that octave switch! What I love about that track is the way he shows, effortlessly, that you can actually play a slow air beautifully on an accordeon (his spelling, ahem!) That MacMahon chappie never convinced me with his efforts.
tradmd.com has solo tunes for learning, but they're homespun (not professional recordings).
otherwise i think frankie gavin and liz carrol are missing from what people have said already above..
I seen Danny O'Mahoney at his CD launch in Derrygonnelly earlier in the year and quite a night it was, I can tell you.
I'd heartily recommend the new MacDara Ó Raghallaigh CD as my contribution to this thread along with a lot of those already mentioned
Dónal Mc Cague, fiddler from Co. Monaghan recently launched his solo album called Bits N Pieces with Brian McGrath, Michael McCague and Johnny Ringo Mc Donagh. see www.bitsnpieces2011.com for details. Available in Powell's in Galway with Brian also.

Re: CD's
The early De Danaan (spelt this way!) albums showcase really good playing of every instrument you seem to play, often enough in solo breaks.
At least it sounds pretty good to me!
