I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

I made a rough recording in my room with a simple dictaphone with me playing three tunes on the fiddle.

I am completely and utterly open to criticism and pointers as well as the odd compliment ;-) be as nice or as nasty as you want!

Nice rhythm, good bow trebles. Maybe you could let the bowing breathe a little; it sounds, I don’t know, relentless, overbearing, unvarying. Some of this could be due to the recording – close miking maybe? In general I would say your noting hand is ahead of your bowing hand and arm. Not knowing your background, it’s hard to know what else to say.

Yeah, some rolls.

very dry; I'd say need more rhythm
though I agree with bob h that the beat
is good. rhythm is more accents.

There is no way I'm downloading anything from that site or giving them my phone number so I can listen to it. If you put it somewhere else that's more secure, I'll be happy to listen.

Re: I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

I remember "woD" posted a bunch of pretty weird comments to
the list last year and then went silent. At the time I thought he was
somebody I know from Australia, but I can hear from this I was wrong.

Re: I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

Knocks the socks off my fiddle playing - but I'm not much of a fiddle player. Actually, I enjoyed listening to it and I'd be very happy to play with you in a session. It doesn't, however, hold my attention the way the playing of some fiddlers does. I'm inclined to agree with much of what Bob says - it could do with a little more space and a little more variation in the phrasing. It could, no doubt, also be enhanced by a few rolls on some of the longer notes, but I am reluctant to offer this as a 'solution' as it is perfectly possible to play lots of rolls yet be a bad fiddler, or to be an outstanding fiddler without ever playing a roll.

How can you tell from this you were wrong, Hup? Have you heard this somebody-you-know-from-Australia play fiddle before?

yes

Re: I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

OK - I didn't know he played fiddle at all.

...So this is somebody masquerading as somebody-we-know-from-Australia for a lark. Or is it himself deliberately adopting an uncharacteristic style?

Re: I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

I though we had this discussion about three years ago? Back when woD appeared, I thought. Plus, IIRC, around the same time there was a spate of new members with names like "I love Dow" and "Dow for sainthood" and stuff ...

Re: I would like to know what you think of my fiddle playing

I double guarantee you with cheese on top:

that Dow has nothing to do with this,
no knowledge of it,
and no interest in it.
