Tune name

Does anyone know the name of this tune that I've suddenly discovered I seem to know? And where does it come from? Thanks.

Re: Tune name

Usually in Ador it's in CRE2 in junior Crehan's version and named (for him I assume) the Old grey Gander.

A versatile tune, depending on sharpening the the c or not it is basically also The Humours of Quilty, The Eel in the Sink, one of the John Naughton's ones and a few others beside. Liam Flynn recorded it as 'Willie Clancy's'.

Re: Tune name

I've definitelly heard it, could it be Farewell to Milltown Malbay?

Re: Tune name

Thanks Prof. Perfect. I'll go fish out CRE2 now and check it out.

There's one or two other Eels in the Sink, I think ...

Re: Tune name

Ceol nr 21. Breandan Breathnach's journal. The article is reproduced in 'The Man and his Music' (p.101-104)

Re: Tune name

Oh look, this is getting silly. I just looked up the CRE2 version and find that that one's one of my oldest tunes (as in, I've probably been playing that one, under that name, for 40 years or so). I can't believe I didn't associate the two different versions. I shall give myself a sharp smack to the head.
