Just say 'no' to smartphones. Ha ha! I know I'll get one eventually.
I've never seen or heard of him playing anything other than a
top of the line pro Boehm flute. The idea of Baroque specialists
on wooden flutes is fairly recent - last 30 years or so.
According to his own website, he currently plays a 20 carat solid gold Nagahara flute which was especially commisioned for him.
He has been known for many years as "The Man With the Golden Flute" because he has for a long time played a solid gold flute. I have a feeling it used to be a Yamaha, but, on this one, it's me who could be wrong.
I recall an interview where he said that he was once run over by a yamaha scooter and that this was the closest he ever got to a yamaha. He has a web site which gives lots of info about all the flutes he has ever played, but they are all Boehm and most of the recent ones are solid gold.
I picked one(a gold flute) up once and they are a bit heavier than silver, but not by as much as you would think. I think you're looking at 20K€ for something like that.
I, for one, have neither seen nor heard of Sir James performing upon a traditional wooden flute - but I am no one to ask for the facts on Mr. Galway, nor his career.
>>>I just thought it would be nice if more of us attempted to acknowledge your original question.
My knowledge of this is no indication, yea or nay, positive or negative, as to whether he plays upon wood for pleasure.
Says his first flute was a Selmer which is a piece, but it's a Boehm flute. All of the flute he's talking about are Boehms.
I believe the model he plays now is one that he collaborated with Nagahara to create, which can be found at http://www.nagaharaflutes.com/galway.html
I'll be seeing him in Montreal in November, maybe I'll get a chance to ask him if he's owned any simple system flutes!

Re: Sir James's flute
I think he plays a solid gold Powell Boehm flute. He does not play a simple system or wood flute, though he does play tin whistle at times.

BAck at a real computer....
Strange when authenticity is important in the digital world.
Droid insisted on changing my words to what it wanted to spell.
Thanks for the comments. Gave me a reason to pull out my Matt Molloy solo albums.

To the OPs original question -
