Broken Reed (C#/D box)

Broken Reed (C#/D box)

I got new reeds on my box about 10 years ago, but my high g is after breaking. i'm on the other side of the world (New Zealand) and contemplating a few options...

A) Get the whole set replaced, but their aren't many box makers in New Zealand. do i buy reeds myself and try fitting them. (a lot of potential to go wrong).

B) Only replace the high g, but the tone may differ sightly from my other (older) reeds.

C) Mail box home and get it repaired, but this will cost way too much.

...is their any options i haven't considered yet?...

Re: Broken Reed (C#/D box)

This question might be better on melodeon.net

You might get in touch with Theo Gibb, on melodeon.net or via his shop site http://www.theboxplace.co.uk/ He has always been very generous with advice. He does great work, but he's in the UK. He may know a good worker nearer to you.

Good luck. We need all the C#/D accordions in fine fettle!

Re: Broken Reed (C#/D box)

I have heard that Mark Tandy in Canberra is very good, someone on the National Folk Festival website would have a contact for him.

Re: Broken Reed (C#/D box)

Options A) and B) would be totally absurd in my view. No need to assume that more reeds are going to fail after only 10 years. Are there really no accordion repairers in NZ? A piano-accordion technician would be able to replace the broken reed for you and probably source it too - and check out all the other ones. BTW another experienced button-box repairman in Oz is Malcolm Clapp.

Re: Broken Reed (C#/D box)

There is someone in Hamilton, don't know his name but find a music shop there and ask. There was someone in Dunedin (Ian Costello?), don't know if he is still doing it.

You could always have a go yourself, most Kiwis are half way handy, it's not rocket science, and replacement reeds are available.

PS, Malcolm Clapp retired about six months ago...

Re: Broken Reed (C#/D box)

You wouldn't need to post the whole " box ", just the reed block with the faulty one. That would reduce the weight & size & post cost. When replacing button "box" reeds it's a must to make sure you have the right side facing out
