I'd be interested in any info on this too... I've been working in Dublin for over a year and a half and have been very bad about trying to find a nice local session. Instead I have been getting out of Dublin nearly every weekend to get my fix of tunes elsewhere!
Terenure isn't too far from where I'm living, so if there was a nice open session there it would be great...
No, I've heard about it, but it feels a little out of my way since my car has gone and strike and I'm stuck with public transport. So far I've just gone to a few sessions in town.
I enjoy Devitts in Camden St. on the very rare occasions that I go there. I was there recently on a thursday night and met a really nice bunch of musicians there and had some great tunes, but the place was a little crammed and noisy for my liking. It might become my regular Dublin sesh though, since I do evening classes in Kevin St, and it's just up the road. There's a mighty session there on friday nights too, but these days I'm usually off down the country once I finish work on the friday evening.
I also went to O'Donoghues on a tuesday night recently and again, a really nice bunch of people but the place was just too noisy for my liking!
There's nothing I love more than a cosy session with 5 or 6 (friendly) musicians, where the acoustics are good (i.e. not a vast carpeted open space), and the place isn't too busy,. Am I dreaming if I think I'll find that in Dublin?
Ahhh, Gub Dandy's in Terenure!!! Forgive me for getting sappy and sentimental, but that is where my love of Irish Traditional Music began in 1998.
I walked in there as the stereotypical ignorant dum bass Yank with a bodhran who viewed the goat as my "free pass" to play without knowing or learning anything.
O! What great mentors I had there, and what great friends I made there, and how much I've learned since that bitter beginning.
How I'd love to go back and meet up with those lads and have tunes with them again!

Will you find that anywhere? I have dreams about that session too but it seems to be in the same category as Santa Claus and the Tooth Faiery
I have been lead to believe that Gub Dandys hire in trad musicians sporadically on Friday and Saturday nights so it doesn't seem like an open session. I played there once for a private function which is when I found this out.
Pat Mustard, great review on the Thursday night at Devitt's, I actually set up that session with the help of a friend of mine, we sat many Thursdays as just the two of us in a quiet bar with 15-20 patrons never expecting that we would have created a bar filling session of 10-20 musicians! You might post that on the session review page, or maybe you already did! It's not "my session" now as I soon leave the country but it always will hold a special place in my heart and I plan to make the very very most of the next 5 Thursdays there! Maybe see you there this week!
It was actually yourself who recommended that session to me in the first place! I chatted with you briefly at the session a few weeks ago - I was playing whistle and was there with my Canadian friend who was playing fiddle... not sure if you'll remember us! You did a nice job on 'The Spoons Murder'
If I can find the energy to come back into town this evening I just might pop in again and hope I can get a seat!
Yeh Pat Mustard I was wrecked last night after a lot of travelling around Ireland and it didn't register that you and Pat Mustard were the same person, especially seeing as I often miss the session on visits to the States, it was great meeting ye and don't be shy on starting more tunes next time, we had a very quiet and chilled session last Thursday with just 5 of us playing, very unusual compared to weeks of several players and chaotic order of proceedings (5 string banjo!!!) - I guess the troublesome trio have started getting the idea that we want them to play a bit more of what we play and a bit less of slowed down hornpipes and marches.
Apparently one week there was a round robin setup and they still were jumping in out of turn!!!
I probably told you that I'd recommend Sin E on Sunday nights, last Sunday was a huge session http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODPCb5g4Fe8 but I have frequently been a 3rd musician alongside session.org piper crionadh and his brother, an excellent guitarist, sure might see you there some Sunday either (not this Sunday though) or on a Thursday!

Gub Dandy's in Terenure, Dublin
Hi all,
I know we are not supposed to post session queries but my searches have proven fruitless so forgive me.
Does anyone know whether Gub Dandy's of Terenure have "all-inclusive" sessions? ie are they paid musicians or can anyone go along and play??
Thanks...

Not too far from that area myself Mr Mustard, so would be perfect.
Have you tried Kielys in Donnybrook?

TSS, I play regularly at 2 such sessions. Of course they vary a little depending on who shows up, if there's a major sports event on the day etc. etc.
If you're round this way again I'll take you to the secret locations!

I play there. Going there tonight. Don't tell anyone that it's at Tommy Doyle's on a Wednesday, wouldn't want it to get overrun.
