So, who was at the fleadh in Cavan, and what did you think of it?
I only got down for Thursday night and Friday night, and was off again by midday on Saturday.
I saw the Dervish gig on Thursday night and really enjoyed it. My feet were tapping as they ripped through 'The Fair Wind' in 2 different keys. After the gig a few of us went out and played on the street for ages, and managed to get into a session for a few tunes that was still going at about 4am.
I spent Friday afternoon, evening and night in a pub near the bus station that was a little less chaotic than the town centre. It was a nice little session with plenty of free pints (Who said Cavan people were mean?! )
The campsite I was at was surprisingly civilised with plenty of security about the place.
I must say I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as the quieter atmosphere of Drumshanbo, but then, I suppose you have to expect the all-Ireland fleadh to be a bit of a zoo.
I'd be interested to hear what other people thought of it.
Not that I'm really bothered but always a little bit curious to see if people I know who were competing have done well in the Fleadh. Because when that moment occurs in a Mustard Board discussion where you really need to drop a name, I want to be ready.
Afraid I have no idea... I spent my time there playing tunes and drinking pints and going to just the one gig... I didn't see or hear anything to do with competitions!
Ah, was about to post that link but got beaten to it! There's one name on the list who I definitely know, and another who I *think* I played some tunes with a few months back, but I won't be able to do too much name-dropping
Ah, two more Senior wins for Leitrim and one of our county councillors came second as well. So there'll be no need to buy the local 'Observer' on Wednesday.
I won't be able to do any name-dropping, though I think I may have once been in a piping class at Willie Week with someone who won their piping class. Does that count?
Thank you for posting the final list.
They were very slow to update the information during the weekend. Late yesterday (Sunday), we were still waiting to see the results from the Saturday competitions.
I thought that the information and videos on the website were much better last year.
i thought it was not as crowded as last year but still manic in the streets on Saturday night. The weather kept dry apart from Friday which was a big plus. Overall I enjoyed it better this time.
I was there for saturday afternoon and sunday. Tim O Brien just blew the town hall away on sat evening. Managed to see 2 under 18 fiddle players face off after a dead heat and the better one lost with a slip of the tempo 4 bars from the end of the first B. ces't la vie...
For anyone keeping score, I just killed an hour counting up how many of the winners (1st, 2nd or 3rd) were from each county or country. Unless I made a few mistakes, here's the count:
Clare - 55
Cork - 52
Limerick - 41
Kerry - 39
Galway - 32
Mayo - 28
Monaghan & Sligo - 25 each
Laois - 18
England - 17
Offaly - 16
Donegal & Dublin - 15 each
Tipperary - 14
Cavan - 12
Longford - 11
Tyrone - 10
Armagh & Meath - 9 each
Down, Leitrim & Scotland - 8 each
Fermanagh & Wexford - 7 each
Waterford - 5
Derry, Roscommon, Westmeath & Wicklow - 4 each
Kildare & Louth - 3 each
Antrim, Luxembourg, USA & Wales - 1 each
Carlow & Kilkenny - 0 each
Wow, the USA got a token 3rd place finish! Weren't there like 10-15 winners from the US last year? Did we just show worse, or were there rule changes or politics involved? (Or was it just different adjudicating?)
There is another American besides the thirdplace already mentioned: current Clare resident and New Hampshire native Elvie Miller came in first in senior accompaniment on piano.
Kilkenny will take their revenge in the hurling!! As for poor 'ol Carlow, always the bridesmaid. Curious that trad is very weak in the South East of Ireland according to the CCE rankings - Wicklow, Wexford, Waterford, Carlow & Kilkenny all well down the rankings - maybe it's time for some sort of apostalic mission to put us all on the right track!
