I just bought a hohner preciosa on ebay germany. I noticed that the preciosa and liliput have 21 + 4 treble buttons. But the one i bought has 21 + 3 treble buttons. Does anyone knows about this layout? I haven't received the preciosa yet, don't know even if it is C/F or Bb/Eb.
Here is the link of the instrument i bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360381040768&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1204
Hopefully someone have more information. Thanks!
I have seen pics of at least one other 21 + 3 Preciosa, a grey one that sold last year. Maybe this was an earlier version than the more common 21 + 4 melody layout (just a speculation on my part however).
Other Hohner clubs can be found in versions with 2 - 7 (or more) buttons on the inside row, and the layouts of the smaller versions are not always the same as for the corresponding buttons of the larger versions. Some of those layouts can be found here:
Thank you PG!
I also was considering the possibility of being an earlier version. It makes sense, maybe they realise it was possible to fit another button for the accidentals.
I'll try contact Theo or Mike.
If anyone else have information, i would appreciate.
I've not seen one of these, but I have seen two other variants. One with only the two long rows, and no half row, and one with 11/10/4 buttons where the first buuton on the 10 row and the first button on the 4 row are linked and operate the same reeds.
I have one of these, 21+3, in Bb/Eb. A beautiful instrument, I bought it from Mike Rowbotham who did a lovely job of refurbishing it. He had (I understand) had it for a while, and said at that time that it was an unusual variant. He didn't say at that time whether it was earlier than the more common 21+4, and I didn't ask...it sounded great and played well, and that was enough....
Cheers,
Guy
Another variable is whether there is celluloid on the thumb-rest surface of the melody keyboard. I think the 11/10/3 Preciosas I have seen all have celluloid there. I also have a Preciosa with 11/10/4 that has celluloid, but some 11/10/4 Preciosas lack the celluloid and the entire melody-side thumb-rest surface is black-painted wood as on a Hohner Liliput. Again, we could speculate whether this represents a change in the model specifications over time. I think all Preciosas that I have seen have a serial number, so maybe these questions can be answered some day.
When i receive it i will post here all characteristics and maybe the S/N. I'm looking forward to see whether it is in C/F or Bb/Eb.
I'm aware that i'll probably have to spend some to have it perfectly tuned, but i think it worth every cent.
Many thanks
Tiago
Hi!
I received the preciosa here 5 days ago. It is tuned in Bb/Eb, club system. It has celluloid on the thumb-rest surface of the melody side, as PG said. I couldn't find the serial number, but on the back of the melody side horizontally upper position is written: "D.R.P angem". The purple bellows still tight, almost doesn't leak. It needs to be tuned again. I do not know what the purpose of a button located underneath the side of the melody. It is a plastic button different from the other mother of pearl buttons. It is right next to the bellows. The instrument is in very good condition, and i'm satisfied with the purchase.
Don't know if you are still following this thread, but the extra button on the underside of the box is probably to unlock an internal bellows-lock mechanism. This is common or maybe even standard on all the early-model Preciosas. It's often out of order when you receive an unrestored box. Email me for help using it and / or fixing it, or of course your accordion tech can help you when you get the box tuned. The serial numbers are often stamped faintly into the celluloid on the rear of the box.

And also on www.melodeon.net. Theo Gibb and Mike Rowbotham on that latter site can tell you more I'm sure!
