Re: Is all well in this clip?

that piano accompaniment is driving me mad and is far too loud

Re: Is all well in this clip?

The pianist let them put his name to that?

Re: Is all well in this clip?

nice accordion playing,
The piano player played some very VERY strange chords, NOT AS BAD but almost almost in the class of some of Michael Colemans piano players. He deserved to win the all ireland putting up with those bizarre chords

Re: Is all well in this clip?

All credit to Pat Burton for playing like that with barely a sign.

But I guess they'd had a run through first................?!

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Right at the very beginning when the bloke in shirtsleeves (Pat Burton) is getting the trophy, it rather looks like the old geezer with the jacket & medal squares up to kiss him but there is a sudden cut away to the music.
I'm sorry but I am not familiar who he is.

Re: Is all well in this clip?

There was definitely a bit of chemistry between them there -- mostly vitriol, judging by the finish.

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Surely Comhaltas knows the difference between a box and a fiddle?

Re: Is all well in this clip?

If you look at 1.30 into the clip, you'll see that the keyboard is placed on top of two tables, our man on the keyboard must have sat at the wrong table....

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Why didn't that clip end up on the cutting room floor. Is there no quality control at that website?

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Well the pianist is using E Minor chords throughout but the very first note( excluding the anacrusis bar) is a G# and G# occurs quite often, so the "correct" chord would be an E Major. The tune sounds like it's in E Mixolydian(3 sharps). I met Pat on my last trip to Ireland in 2007 at The Fleadh Cheoil at Mike Searson's Cairdin accordeon display and this clip does not do his playing justice. E Mixolydian is not a common key and perhaps the pianist would perform better with something more familiar. If you listen to his timing it's spot on, just the wrong tonic chord I think, but it does ruin the performance.

Re: Is all well in this clip?

The accordion player is Pat Barton.

Re: Is all well in this clip?

If you listen carefully to Pat Barton at the start, he says "jigs in A". Why does Pat Maguire play in Em?

# Posted on July 27th 2011 by Weejie

Re: Is all well in this clip?

The tune is, as Tony O'Rourke has already said, in E mixolydian. This shares the same key signature as A maj, 3 sharps, and may be why Pat Barton thinks its in A.
The pianist playing E minor chords where they should be E major is a common mistake amongst some backers who don't understand mixolydian tunes. They can hear it's not a straightforward major tune, and just assume it's minor. I Can't understand why they don't hear how it clashes, and it drives me mad trying to play a mixolydian melody against it!

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Wasn't that jig "Tim Burton's"?

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Cathycook,
I've had a similiar experience. I play quite a few tunes in A Major, using A,D,E chords as the main three chords and yet often a backer upperer will play A to G. It does'nt seem to happen in other keys, just A. I just stop playing and explain what the chords should be. You soon find out who the genuine learners are!

Re: Is all well in this clip?

I'm a backer.
Tune players often drop a hint as to what key/ mode a tunes are in but:
1. The accent of the person can make E sound like A (and vice versa). Try thinking of 'E' or 'A' said by a bloke from London, a Scottish cat, a Kerryman, a geezer from the Punjab, a Texan and a Venusian.
2. One may grasp that is e.g. 'A' but often there is no clue as to whether it is A minor (aeolian, harmonic, melodic), A major, A dorian or A mix. And let's face it, some backers just do not pay attention or know the difference!
3. A tune maybe in 'A' but the harmony starts on a 'non I' chord i.e. in Adorian but starts on a G (major) chord.

There are ways around this:-
a. the hat method
b. the Eric Morcambe method
c. the semaphore method
d. the shaved parrot method

Re: Is all well in this clip?

" the Eric Morcambe method"

The Morecambe method being to play all the notes but not necessarily in the right order?

# Posted on July 29th 2011 by Weejie

Re: Is all well in this clip?

For a competition the backer should probably learn the correct chords.

Re: Is all well in this clip?

Looks like the clip has been removed, only fair to both players.

No, I was wrong, the link didn't seem to work, but it's there now.
Shan't look again.
