I just moved from New York back to my home state of Iowa about three weeks ago. It goes without saying that I dearly miss my weekly lessons (haven't managed to have one yet since I left, hoping to get that going via skype here beginning in August again) and miss the sessions I used to attend to mostly listen and sometimes play.
Decided I would check out the local session in the hopes of having a new Tuesday night obsession and make some acquaintances in the Des Moines area who share a common interest.
Imagine my surprise to find a belly dancer (complete with the hip jingly things, finger cymbals, and a silver platter of lit candles balancing on her head) performing interpretative dance to trad.
Well we are talking about Iowa here - anything outside of the 4H Club and the FFA is considered "exotic" and "multi-cultural' and therefore lumped together correct?
Iowa certainly isn't completely devoid of good Irish music. Maybe get in touch with Tim Britton, the piper, who is over in Fairfield. He might be able to help put you in touch with other like-minded people...
Is belly dancers or bodhrans the only choices we have? If so, that doesn't sound good to me.
Frauschmittle, have you recovered from this traumatic experience yet or are you still in therapy?
Thanks to all of you who shared links... just what I needed, more examples. Much appreciated.
Reverand - I have had the good fortune to hear Tim Britton play on other occasions. And... I actually wasn't complaining about the music. Just wasn't expecting the side show...I have had the pleasure here to meet Greg Valentine, who besides playing in my co-worker's bluegrass band, is a lovely irish fiddle player... and honestly at this point they all play better than I do, so any session is better than no session. Lots for me to learn from whereever I can get it. Just not sure I appreciate the finger cymbals and belly get up in the session setting.
Laurence - not sure exactly where I stand... still in shock...
Have you found a good therapist yet? Preferably one who plays music in his or her spare time. Such as the two psychiatrists who I play music with regularly. One of them plays mandolin and the other plays guitar. Yes both of them like playing Irish music as much as I do.
Frauschmittle, if you aren't sure exactly where you stand, maybe you should sit down until you recover from the shock. And, if sitting down doesn't help, then maybe you should lie down so you can be horizontal until you recover.
