I'm kinda new to this whole internet thing....i've been playing for years and I thought I new the language but someone's gotta help me here....what's ITM?
and another thing....what does it mean whe people start throwing pint glasses at you at a sessiun?.....this happens to me all the time....does it mean they like me?
Denis (nice stuff and great crack on the Law web site by the way), some people use "ITM" as shorthand, but others here frown on it. Also, if you call it "diddly music," you'll land in a deep dark cyber hole with just one other person for company, and he plays viola (gasp!)
LOL -- Denis, what Will is tactfully trying to say is that some people feel that using "ITM" is somehow disrespectful and just a little on the weird side, and some people feel that "Irish traditional music" just takes too flipping long to type...
Viola players RULE. Well, it is hard to play ITM with a viola. Also, I've come up with a new ackronym for ITM. Iri.Tra.Mus. haha, so both sides are happy!
I know a couple of people who play 5 string fiddles at sessions here in Manchester. Basically it's a fiddle and a viola on the same instrument.
Some tunes can be played an octave below the normal pitch and it really adds a lot.
We occasionally get cellos and double Basses and all are welcome.
We even have a Sousaphone player.
Frankie Gavin used a viola on some of the early De Danann albums, and it sounded like a fiddle recording slowed down...maybe it was poor choice sticking the viola track in the middle of all those fiddle tracks...maybe it needs a different approach to the viola to make it sound good for jigs & reels etc....

"It Tastes Maggotty." That's why they throw the glasses at you.

Re: Catchin' up with some sessiun "lingo"
If you're not on the wind-up, then ITM = Irish Traditional Music.

Never had pint glasses thrown at me, so I wouldn't know!

A violist's fingers are like lightning--they never strike the same place twice.

Are the pints full? Are they intending on you catching them? Do they bounce hard? Please clarify a bit...

I know one viola player and you couldn't tell anything bad about her - if you would, she'd stab you in the eye with a bow.

Re: Catchin' up with some sessiun "lingo"
Who says you can't diddle on a viola? OK it's more physical than an ordinary fiddle, but that's the only difference really

Re: Catchin' up with some sessiun "lingo"
Guinness, Tea, Robinsons Mild - I'm not all that fussed, so long as its not freezing cold.
Zina - I think we can let Denis join the in crowd for a probationary period (until we find out how well he makes tea, perhaps).
Sorry this isn't a serious and enlightening contribution, but its Sunday afternoon and I had to come in to work, so the choice was flippant or grumpy.
