PRESS RELEASE////
CELEBRATION OF LEITRIM MUSIC WITH DERVISH

Leitrim County Council’s second Traditional Music Residency featuring the renowned traditional group DERVISH comes to a close in July 2011 with the Leitrim launch of a CD recorded with Leitrim musicians and members of Dervish at the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo, Co Leitrim.

The new CD, entitled ‘The Leitrim Equation², emerges out of Dervish’s regular visits to the county over 18 months from September 2009 and consists of a mixture of songs and music from Dervish and Leitrim musicians they met and worked with during their time in Leitrim. The emphasis of this recording is on the ‘voice’ of Leitrim as explored through familiar Leitrim songs such as ‘Lovely Leitrim’, ‘Shores of Lough Bran’, ‘My County Leitrim Queen’ given a Dervish twist.

The launch of ‘The Leitrim Equation²’ will be celebrated with a concert by Dervish with a host of Leitrim’s finest musicians at the Opening Concert of the Joe Mooney summer school in Drumshanbo. The concert - "Mórtas Liatroma" will take place in the Ramada Hotel on Sunday 17th July at 8.30pm, in what promises to be a fantastic night of music and song. Some of the local guest musicians will include Ben Lennon, Dave Sheridan, Lorraine Sweeney, Eleanor Shanley, Louise Devitt, Mary McPartlan, Michael O’Brien, Mossie Martin and more…

The emphasis on the Leitrim songs came out of a desire by Dervish member Cathy Jordan to meet and sing with a number of Leitrim singers during Dervish’s eighteen month residency with the aim of identifying songs native to Leitrim and bringing them to a new audience. During the residency Cathy and the band met and sang with Leitrim singers such as Fionnuala Maxwell, Eleanor Shanley, Mary McParlan, Eamonn Daly, Tom Mulvey and Rosie Stewart. They also shared a memorable bonfire night swapping songs with actor Adrian Dunbar who, when in Ireland, resides in North Leitrim.

Thanking Dervish and the musicians they worked with, Jackie Maguire, County Manager said “Dervish consistently push boundaries and absorb musical influences from across the globe. Equally they are deeply rooted and mindful of a legacy passed down which relates strongly to people and the places in which we live. During their time here they found communities and individuals that are part of a vibrant music tradition with an ambition to bring that music forward to new audiences and an eagerness to absorb new influences into that practice. The Leitrim Equation² is testament to that energy and the combined commitment of Dervish, the musicians and singers they worked with and the communities they spent time with.”

A BIT ABOUT THE DERVISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC RESIDENCY....

The Dervish residency consisted of 8 visits to the county, during which time Dervish were exposed to all that Leitrim has to offer. “Being the Leitrim Traditional Band in Residence for 18 months brought us into contact with the both the children of the county and the eldest members of its community. This for me was a genuinely rewarding experience and really allowed us to get 'under the skin' of the place. We met some of the finest people one could encounter and were treated with the most gracious hospitality. The music in addition to all this made it a part of my life I'll always recall with great fondness.” (Michael Holmes). From the beginning Dervish were extremely committed to the concept and embraced all that was involved be it a visit to a hospital or residential home or to a two roomed national school, with enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism. They shared their time and musicality at every turn demonstrating enormous respect for all the people they met and for the living tradition they encountered throughout the length and breadth of Leitrim. “Whilst on the residency what struck me most was the sheer volume of musicians in the county and what was more striking the large amount of children playing traditional Irish music in schools which gives us all great hope for native music for the future.” (Shane Mitchell)

Pedantic I know, but...

Yeah! Wotteffah!
But what does 'Equation Squred' mean? Does it have some sybolic meaning or is it just an abstract title? It doesn't make mathmatical sense.

Re: Leitrim Equation²

Presumably a spin on Leitrim Equation #2, being the latest in a series of 2, the first being that of the Lúnasa musicians:

Re: Leitrim Equation²

Think I'll give that concert a miss then! Thanks for the warning I thought Rosie Stewart was from Fermanagh!!

Re: Leitrim Equation²

Rosie is from Cashel near Garrison, but she's been running a pub in Kiltyclogher for the last few years.

Re: Leitrim Equation²

I think the criteria must include working and/or living in Leitrim because Mossie Martin is from Keadue in Roscommon.

Re: Leitrim Equation²

The first one was great. I'm sure the second one will be too, no matter what the title in the shop is.

Re: Leitrim Equation²

That's correct, murfbox.

County Leitrim has a population of just 30,000 or abouts, so slagging off this enterprise because someone's slipped in over one of the five county borders is a bit curmudgeonly.

Re: Leitrim Equation²

Whoops, make that six borders - Donegal, Fermanagh, Cavan, Longford, Roscommon and Sligo.
