I haven't played much in the last few months. Finally got a few minutes to play today but the tunes aren't flowing. I hope I have not forgotten the lot
And I wonder how many tunes have become extinct over the years due to non play-ment? There must have been loads from the pre-recording era that just diisappeared.
Written down? You mean with dots? We all know dots are totally worthless when it comes to capturing the real music. If you can't actually hear the tune, then you can't possibly learn it.
Whether you write them down or not, they're not lost. They come back - sometimes in the middle of another, similar tune, which can be awkward. Or it can be brilliant, if they wait their turn. "I haven't thought of that one in years" - you recognize that phrase, right?
Every era has its 'must have' tunes. Let's just pick a couple of reels at random from my era. Couldn't tell you the last time I heard a box player playing 'The King of the Clan' or 'Imelda Roland's'.. Yet those tunes were a must for box players in the sixties. On the other hand I wouldn't know one of the tunes that some of the younger musicians play nowadays.

Re: forgotten tunes
Lots of them got written down, so they're not lost, just dormant.
