For those interested in such things here are the All Britain results from Preston this weekend past. I see that Scottish branches (Irish Minstrels, St Patrick's and St James the Great) did particularly well this year.
Tell you what I find mildly refreshing after a quick scan down that list of names - they seem to mostly reflect the names they probably go by in everyday life!!
When our children were involved a few years ago in fleadheanna in Ireland - it used to always perplex me when I scanned down the programme listings to where familiar names would be. I'd be looking and trying to see where e.g. a John Lynch (not real person) would be playing etc. and eventually figure out that the local branch would him in as Seán Ui Loinsigh or along those lines. In fact the programme would be full of names of children, as Gaeilge. The idea being, that if one enters the Irish form of peoples names, they might get a better adjudication..
Now don't get me wrong - any person who consistently uses the Irish form of their name is entitled to be respected and known as such. But I have little time for the above sort of pathetic tokenism to the language. If I had met young John in the corridor and called 'Hey Seán, how did you get on' - he wouldn't have had a clue I was talking to him because his everyday name would be John.
So, I admire the honesty evident in the UK CCE branches.
I love the way the CCE expect everybody to be fluent in Irish. At least that's always been the impression I got over the years. For years I thought I was playing an accordion only to find it was in fact a 'music box' (bosca ceol) I wonder will we ever see the day when one of the CCE branches from the UK or NI is titled The Queen Elizabeth the Second Branch' Now wouldn't that rise the hackles.!
It was a good weekend, pleased South Birmingham did so well. And Scotland's blessed with some amazing talent (St Roch's especially are ridiculously brilliant).
A big thanks to the organisers, it was a great weekend. They even organised a man with a buggy to carry my daughters accordion from the carpark to the venue
Hey Dan, nice words about Sam Sloan. She is indeed a brilliant box player. We play in a band called The Jones Boys (www.reverbnation.com/thejonesboys) - we'll be at Broadstairs Folk Week, so come and say hello.
Very nice to see some familiar names, especially Patrick Flannery from Leeds, and Brogan McAuliffe from East London. Hope they still remember me, and we will have some tunes together next year or so. And fortune will smile on the Leeds Ceili Band!
I met Orlaith and Brogan in Sligo nearly 7 years ago. One night we had a wee session with Carmel Gunning, Seamus O'Kane, Sheila O'Dowd (mother of Seamus O'Dowd of Dervish), and Veronica Ryan (sister of Kevin Henry now based in New York).
