Mandolin fret

Mandolin fret

So I've got myself a surprisingly nice mandolin from eBay and I'm very pleased with it. However, there is one bum fret- when you try to hit a c sharp on the E course it sounds as a D. Does anyone know of an easy way to fix this?
Thanks

Re: Mandolin fret

Plenty of good luthiers about in Edinburgh. Don't mess with it yourself unless you know what you are doing. Fret dressing probably needed, it may just be one high fret.

Re: Mandolin fret

If you lay a straight edge on the fretboard next to the E string, you should be able to tell whether it's just one fret that's a problem. Or if there's a bit of a hump in the fretboard you should be able to see that too.
But Weejie is right, you need to get it fixed by someone who knows what they're doing.

Re: Mandolin fret

Did you consider skipping that note? After all, there are so many other notes. Why worry about one?

Actually, did you ever notice that when you get a bum fret - how many songs and tunes suddenly need that fret?

Re: Mandolin fret

Thanks guys- will take it into someone next time I'm in town to see what can be done. You don't happen to be able to recommend anyone?

Morgan- As it's not really a note that features that much in trad music, it's not too much of an issue, but as soon as I found out about it I suddenly wanted to play all the tunes I know that it does feature in...typical.
