I have a Swede who's going to be singing at my wedding and I need an Irish song for her.
The song needs to be in English for obvious reasons but a few lines of Gaelic would be perfect but not at all necessary.
My favourite song is Jimmy Mó Mhíle Stór (as sung my Kathleen MacInnes) but its a sad song and has therefore got the thumbs down from the girlfriend...
Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
A lot of them are sad though.. Probably need to be something your guests would recognise like Danny Boy, Galway Bay, Slievenamon, De Banks etc. I quite like the song Bunclody, it has a great melody. Maybe Mudcat site would be better place to ask?
Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
It's times like this that make me realize just how many of the love songs from Ireland are sad ones, and probably not suitable for a wedding or happy occasion...
Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
You could try an English translation of a verse or so, but I don't think it will have the same feel. Anyone like to translate? Google can't do it.
Is fada liom uaim I ar uaigneas gach baile a mbionn si
Is le gach oganach suairc a ghluaisfeadh in aice na di
Da dtigtheasa anuas ar chuairt fa bharra na gcraobh
Le goirm na gcuach go ngluaisfinn leatsa mar mhnaoi
A Mhalaidh, a cheadsearc, na treig thusa mise go brach
Is go bhfuil in do dhiaidh gach aon la fa mhallaigh na n-ard
Is tu cruithneacht ar mhnaibh eireann, is tu b’fheile dar ghlac ariamh lamh
Is dar mionna mo bheil, ni breag a bhfuil me is tu a ra
Is a Mhalaidh mo ro-ghra ata an t-orfholt snoite glan reidh
Cum cailce ata ro-dheas a chuirfeadh brod ar fhearaibh an tsaoil
Beilin meala mar na rosai, suil mhodhmhar ghorm gan chlaon
Is I gcoillidh ag buain chnonna, se mo bhron gan malaidh agus me

Maids When You're Young
(Trad)
Because he's got no faloorum, faliddle aye oorum
He's got no faloorum, faliddle aye ay
He's got no faloorum, he's lost his ding-doorum
So maids when you're young never wed an old man
An old man came courting me, hey ding-doorum down
An old man came courting me, me being young
An old man came courting me, fain he would marry me
Maids when you're young never wed an old man
Because he's got no faloorum, faliddle aye oorum
He's got no faloorum, faliddle aye ay
He's got no faloorum, he's lost his ding-doorum
So maids when you're young never wed an old man
When we went to church, hey ding-doorum down
When we went to church, me being young
When we went to church, he left me in the lurch
Maids when you're young never wed an old man
Because he's got no faloorum, faliddle aye oorum
He's got no faloorum, faliddle aye ay
He's got no faloorum, he's lost his ding-doorum
So maids when you're young never wed an old man
When we went to bed, hey ding-doorum down
When we went to bed, me being young
When we went to bed, he lay like he was dead
Maids when you're young never wed an old man
Because he's got no faloorum, faliddle aye oorum
He's got no faloorum, faliddle aye ay
He's got no faloorum, he's lost his ding-doorum
So maids when you're young never wed an old man
When he went to sleep, hey ding-doorum down
When he went to sleep, me being young
When he went to sleep, out of bed I did creep
Into the arms of a handsome young man
And I found his faloorum, faliddle aye oorum
I found his faloorum, faliddle aye ay
I found his faloorum, he's got my ding-doorum
So maids when you're young never wed an old man

Too right!
By the end of them, either (a) she's proved unresponsive, or (b) he's bumped her off and she's still unresponsive. Especially if he's buried her.
Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
I work with a group who play at lots of wedding services. This song is one that is nearly alwas requested by the bride, and is sung by our girl lead singer.
'She Move Thro' The Fair'
Sinead O'Connor does a nice job of the song. http://youtu.be/cWHo7syTQOo
Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
It is hard to avoid the conclusion that, whether because of history or because of the outworking of some internal dynamic or both, something in Irishness is averse to bliss.
The sunny uplands of Greek Tragedy, Presbyterian sermons and the poetry of R.S.Thomas might prove happier hunting-grounds for material of an auspicious nature.

Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
Although the poem/ song was originally written to be sung by such male singers as John McCormack etc, it seems to be sung mostly by female singers nowadays. Delete 'She' add 'He'
Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
I meant the last verse in the the first set of lyrics given here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She_Moved_Through_the_Fair
The ghost bit. They are the ones I first heard (on the Anne Briggs recording). Wouldn't want another 'Robin Hood theme incident'.

@nicholas: "It is hard to avoid the conclusion that, whether because of history or because of the outworking of some internal dynamic or both, something in Irishness is averse to bliss."
that is very hard to fathom. Irish songs I find the epitome of blissful transcendence, especially dependent on how they are presented. Not sad at all, they have an innate happiness and resilience. Depends on one's perspective, I suspect. As to "Irish-ness", probably innately the same, but I would leave that to nicholas to comment further.

Siúl a Rún maybe? It´s a love story, not too sad and has the chorus as Gaeilge

For a wedding do you have to be careful which variant of the words are used for "She moved through the fair" ?

Re: Traditional Irish Songs suitable for a wedding
Surely the point of "She Moved" is that the marriage was to death? Not really to be sung at weddings unless you really hate them!
I learned the Margaret Barry version.

I don't know whether it's Irish or not, but the Victory Morris Men always sing "The Wedding Song (Come Write Me Down)" at weddings.
Here it is being sung by the Copper Family:
