Hi everyone,
I am trying to find out more info on an obscure session recording i have. I only know it as the " Bill Dennehy recordings", i got it from a friend who got it from another and so on. As far as i know it features Frankie Kennedy on flute, Mairead ni mhoanaigh on fiddle, and Jackie Daly on box, as well as a few more i dont know, and it was recorded in Milltown a long time ago. It is one of the most amazing sessions i have heard and was a huge influence on us when we were recording our album. Its still top of my playlist!
I am look for any info anyone has on it, in particular i am trying to find out the names of the tunes on track 16, it seems to be a Donegal set of tunes by the sound of the tunes but have no clue what they are.
All help welcome,
Thanks
You could ask Bill about it, he was the founder of the San Francisco Fiddler's Club, and recorded a CD with piper Todd Denman. He used to have a Yahoo group swapping CDs of Irish music like the one you describe. Maybe it was in there, I forget. It was called Irishroundrobin, and seems to be kaput. Some mention of it is in the IRTRAD-L archives - arguments about copyright etc. I used to have a copy of the CD list on a hard drive - think that's history, though.
Last I heard Bill was into swapping recordings again - but of classical and jazz.
Bill's still around...The allegations that he'd gotten into Devil worship are just stories. When I called out some mentirosos on that point, they then went on to say how he'd swapped his fiddle for a metal detector, and was frittering away his talents and energies looking for Roman artifacts in Solano County! [Winks a big fat wink] I'll always be grateful for the tapes he sent my way; invariably with the intent to correct my playing as much as entertain. They were mostly his informal recordings of pipers and piping. He withheld his collection of Donegal music from me, so I'm feeling somewhat one-upped. (Sniff)
Thats great guys thanks a million, i will try and contact him and see if i can solve the mystery! Dont feel bad Quigley, if i can find out a way to upload a few tracks ill pass them onto u!
If it's the recording I'm thinking of, the session was 1985 in Quealley's on the final Saturday of Willie Clancy Week. Also present were Paul O'Shaughnessy (fiddle), Eoin O'Neill (bouzouki), and, among others, myself (who has to be the luckiest guy in the world).
As far as I know ( and I was there for the whole session, in July 1985), Steve Moran was the man who recorded the session; he was outside the window of the little sitting room where the session was taking place, which was part of Queallys pub ( now closed). He hung a mic in the window to record it ( for most of it anyway). It was a brilliant session, which was at a very lively pace, and Mick O'Connor on banjo was there for the second half. Have two tapes of it somewhere...

Hadn't heard that rumor. At least it gives hope he's not hanging out with the same type of unsavory characters now. ;)
