Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
Sorry. Herself brings one of her cheap romance novels to pubs where I play, and has learned how easy it is to run a tab with the bar keep for a few glasses of proseco or some other white sparkly that she loves.
At home she now coordinates my practices with her long walks with her dog!

[Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??]
the ladies have their own art to pursue. winning hearts by showing off for passive supplicants went out a long time ago, though clowns like the former governor of california seem not to have grokked that yet.
however, if you are really, really, good, one of your fellow players who happens to be female might thumbs-up your chops, one peer to another.
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
No they are impressed by him.
Bono has admitted in interviews that he doesn't even play guitar:
When we started out I was the guitar player, along with the Edge—except I couldn't play guitar. I still can't. I was such a lousy guitar player that one day they broke it to me that maybe I should sing instead. I had tried before, but I had no voice at all. I remember the day I found I could sing. I said, 'Oh, that's how you do it.'
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
The box player is too busy for romance, he has his hands full holding the music together alone, while far too many rhythm players bob in his wake. Rhythm should never outnumber melody.
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
I apologise for attempting to ruin the direction of this thread, but I have a musical question, (I'm pretty useless when it comes to theory,)
During the first tune he shouts across G, but I don't think the tune is in G at all, there are two many dodgy flats in there, I looked up the ABCs and the tune is normally played in Emin, but it's not played in Emin neither, I then move it a touch and I think that means Fmin, so could someone confirm that the first tune is in Fmin
OK lets get back to where we were, do you not think it's strange that all the tunes have some connection to women, Fermoy Lassies, Miss Monaghan, Red haired Lass, of course the blond from Kerry didn't fit into any of those categories and hence the frosty attitude.
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
What is a "Lass", "Lassie"? Is it a female in general? I know that not all languages have a direct translation. I haven't noticed any tunes about "The Men of..." more so "The Boys of..." or "The ... Boy" But i do see "Maids" and "Woman" a lot. What do these words mean in context?
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
You need to look harder, Fiddlelearner - Boys of Ballisodare, Boys of the Town, Rakes of Mallow, Sporting Paddy - sure, there's loads dedicated to the menfolk.
Lass - a younger female, a girleen or a cailín etc., a 'young one' in some quarters - I'm sure others can add more!
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
I beg your pardon, fiddlelearner as I misread your comment - Men, boys, lads are all kinda the same thing. A young lad might be a 'garsún' - garsoon or a bit of a buck in time past.
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
A maid is a young unmarried girl and implies the innocence of youth as opposed to a woman, who being married or having been married, is more worldly wise. You sometimes find people in old novels calling a little girl or even a toddler " little maid". Lass or lassie refers to any girl or young woman especially in Scotland. These words come from a time and a culture when the lady was the person married to the lord of the manor, an aristocrat, the maid was her servant, often young, and the woman was the working class person living in the village, maybe the maid's mother. I should get out more!
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
I have the feeling ladies are impressed on an entirely random basis and that the quality of one's playing (or lack of it) brings no leverage to bear on this at all.
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
Speaking as an ex-lassie, now a woman, "It's all in the twinkle of the eyes." But if they are a terrible player, that would put them at a distinct disadvantage, however lovely the eyes.
Re: Does being a really good box player impress the ladies??
what a
boom-crash opera. The box player was pretty handy, the pretty lassie to his right looks like she rather be sailing, or in a laser light nightclub or something (the grass is always greener on the other side). But even if she was interested, no, box players do not impress most ladies, in my observation anyway, not those that don't know anything about the music, if that is the idea. Neither do fiddlers in the same context. Actually, bodhran players seem to...but not that a bodhran player playing like that. Talk about two people going their separate ways together!

Well, not that lady.
Though in fairness, what she was thinking was this: I wish that creepy video dude would aim that thing elsewhere.

The lass behind the old guitar player was much hotter, in my considered opinion.

And she looked much more into it, too.

Personally, I usually go for the fiddlers.
But didn't we learn the boys take up guitar playing to impress the girls with Stairway to Heaven?

Probably one step above "being really good at Unix."
To impress, you might try another genre of music, and another instrument. Here is Bono partying with two teenage fans:
