mariposa festival

Gonna be in Orilla, Canada, first week in July and notice that Mariposa festival is on. Any music sessions there?

Re: Orilla: what on earth is in the name?!?..

"ORILLA "...?!...

It sounds as if it ought to be:

A Balkan warlord,

A Mexican drug baron,

A minor Hindu goddess with three black heads and a tunic of plaited snakes,

Cheap Central Asian red wine,

Cheap Central Australian red wine,

An Andalusian mass harvest festival dance,

Lady Gaga's successor,

A make of Indian car from Orissa,

A kind of small gorilla,

Something out of the Kama Sutra or the repertoire of Casanova,

A Beat cafe,

One of those Amazonian fish that launches itself into human genitalia and burrows into them,

One of those beetles pounded into violently powerful aphrodisiacs by Roman Empresses,

A mate of La Goulue and Le Petomane in bygone Paris,

A leading Albanian Surrealist,

Other.

In all events, it doesn't sound like a town in the Scottish Second Division.

This surely makes the name somewhat UnCanadian. Even rather UnQuebequois, surely?!

I had not realised Canada was so mysterious and exotic.

Re: mariposa festival

Orillia.

According to Google Maps it has nearby places called Moons Beach, Amigo Beach, Lake Couchiching, Happyland and Joyland Beach. Something out of the Kama Sutra seems to fit best. With a Mud Lake not far away, I reckon it's the orgy capital of Canada.

Re: mariposa festival

Ah, I see it's really Orillia.

That makes it sound a little less bestial.

Re: mariposa festival

No sessions to speak of. Best bet is to stop by Toronto.

Re: mariposa festival

After all the last show at Mariposa, the organizers rent out a big conference room at one of the local hotels, and all the performers that are still in town get together and have a massive jam. Tremendous blending of styles. Volunteer for the festival, stick around for teardown on Monday, and maybe you'll get invited along. Not sure if volunteers get an automatic invite or not or if I was just lucky.

As for Toronto, 2 hours south, my favorites sessions are at Dora Keogh's and/or the Black Swan across the street, Ceili Cottage (splendid oysters there) and Mullin's. Some sessions are speedier & more technical than others, but all have gloriously wonderful people to play with.
