I like the way the audience applause was edited in there at the end. I guess you cut and pasted it from the Christmas band that was actually playing that night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbWMHCsPxcE , but It's not bad for an April fools joke.
Oh yeah I think the foot tapping was a little bit overplayed, and the chairs at the front were facing the wrong way...and .......
Why was the snare drum bloke filmed through the door into auditorium? Was the cameraman banned from the gig, had he been told to buggah orf or was he just too embarrassed to be in the same room?
Ummm... I'm just a stupid Yank, but I don't like it very much! In fact, not at all. I listened until it got to where someone above said it was the Concertina Reel - I barely even recognized it! I think I know why the chairs were facing the other way (and unoccupied).
"Why was the snare drum bloke filmed through the door into auditorium? Was the cameraman banned from the gig, had he been told to buggah orf or was he just too embarrassed to be in the same room?"
The bouncer was the only one who would hold the phonecam for the duration.
Not the best quality video, but pipe band drumming is a fine art, whether you like it or not (not my cup of tea), and Steven Shedden is a highly respected and very talented young individual, with world class awards to his name. For those who do appreciate the art, there are better quality videos of Shedden to be found.
Each to their own, but slagging something off just because you don't understand the genre isn't too impressive.
Ah, nice high horse yer on there weej. I wasn't trying to impress. And generally am not impressed by awards.
Besides, it's a snare drum. Shame he didn't use his talents for something musical.
My mom taught me to play drums when I was a teen. She was a champion jazz drummer. Drumming demands good coordination and quick reflexes, but that's about it. I moved on to melody instruments--much more interesting. There's hope for Shedden yet...does he play a musical instrument?
" And generally am not impressed by awards"
Nevertheless, they aren't given out like sweeties in the pipe band world. Shedden's 'band' are one of the best - and very progressive in outlook.
" Drumming demands good coordination and quick reflexes, but that's about it"
And a good sense of timing among other things.
"My mom taught me to play drums when I was a teen."
Put an example on youtube and let Mr Shedden voice his opinion.
Pot and kettle?
Nope. I was just slagging both the OP clip and one that popped into the YouTube queue. Because they feature the sort of "not my cup of tea" noise that intrudes on a session once in a blue moon. But if you're a self-righteous, pedantic, humorless arse, you'd get your knickers in a twist about it and go on to prove what a self-righteous, pedantic, humorless arse you can be. You might look up slagging in that free dictionary of yours.
"I was just slagging both the OP clip and one that popped into the YouTube queue. "
The one that was nothing to do with this thread or Irish music as it happens. But, oh no, you know all about drumming because mumsy taught you jazz drumming (not unlike the classical violinists coming on here and claiming they know all about fiddling).
I do have a sense of humour but you weren't in the slightest bit funny.
I've no need to look up 'slagging' in a dictionary. I'm quite familiar with the slang used in this country.
This thread asked a simple question and you turned it into yet another of your 'superior Mr Irish fiddle teacher' diatribes.
The video in question was nothing to do with pipe band drumming but you pick a video of a perfectly capable drummer to air your extremely bigoted opinions.
Perhaps more 'not your cup of tea' noise should intrude on your 'sessions' more often. It might improve your outlook.
Weejie you seem to have a deep admiration for the percussion family - didn't we have a wee tussle a few months ago regarding a certain "Irish drumming techniques on a Conga" youtube video?
"Wow. Um, the "not my cup of tea" was me quoting *you."
Oh really? You were quoting out of context. I have no objection to 'not my cup of tea' players turning up at a session 'once in a blue moon', if they are of the calibre of Shedden.
"G'wan. Hide behind your screen name and no bio. You've got nothing to prove or lose."
I'm not hiding behind anything. I'm right here confronting you. Perhaps I'm not so up myself as to fill a 'bio' full of self -promoting clap-trap.
"If poking fun at a lousy clip of a drummer is "bigoted"
A poor video of an extremely capable drummer - which was totally irrelevant to the thread in both subject of the thread and style of music
The bigotry is cumulative. It is apparent throughout this website..
" then we've entered the weej era of political correctitude. I'll take a pass."
"Weejie you seem to have a deep admiration for the percussion family - didn't we have a wee tussle a few months ago regarding a certain "Irish drumming techniques on a Conga" youtube video? "
There is no deep admiration at all and the circumstances are quite different. The conga player in question was not particularly skilled - it was more the dissection of his persona that was at issue (even his nationality, and it transpired that he was more Irish than the majority of posters on this site). In the example here, someone who may or may not be the piper in the video apparently wanted to know the name of the tunes being played. Next thing Herr Geigenmeister is showing his colours by pulling out a video of someone who clearly does know how to play. What I know about pipe band drumming could be written on a, well commemorative at least, postage stamp but it is enough to know that the venom was pure opinion and not constructive criticism.
Meanwhile, the OP has not reappeared. Yet another of those threads.
Feck off weej. I was just having a laugh at the poorly done video. I never said anything at all about the drummer's talent or abilities. You're the only one here spitting venom all over the place.

Don't know about qualified, but I liked it. The young bloke is brave, prepared to have a go...and got it right. Most young people today can't come close to that. (I have a 17 year old daughter who can churn out an in depth poem without ever having been taught...it is scary. I have only a shadow of that ability, maybe I can churn out a chune if I really practice at it.) Words are greater than music, my friend, otherwise all national leaders would be playing fiddles to us. The last person to do that was the Emperor Nero; and he didn't end up well.
Okay, great. You liked it. As it happens, I didn't. It has nothing to do with whether the kid's brave or a coward or anything of that sort, I just thought the song was poorly written.
