. . . maybe everyone should take turns adding a couple of bars until it turns into a reel. Could call it "Scotch Oats" because it would be a "serial" tune ;)

Sounds a bit like "Put me in the great chest" ?
(but not the setting given on this site -http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3105)

But there's another similar pipe tune at the back of my mind, I'll try to track it down if no-one else ids it.

Thanks for all the help everyone- I've found out what it's called. It's a Uist tune called Och' Is Duine Truagh Mi (A Wretched Man am I)
