John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

A great farewell session tonight for John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly at the Gaelic, Sydney. Isn't it funny how the tunes get mighty just before people have to go...it's a great farewell. John, Mary and Johnny are back to Dublin, Aoife will stay on in Oz for a time. A great experience to hear the west Clare style in the family generations. A very special experience. Thanks very much.

Re: John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

The evening and the Kellys were everything you say but the event had a greater purpose, it was actually a farewell to markinpdx of this parish and his family. They have graced and enrichened us with their presence for more then two years and when they are gone the light in Sydney will seem a little dimmer...

Wish I could have been there. Sometimes Canberra seems a
world away from Sydney and Melbourne ..

Re: John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

you're right, of course, cag. it was farewells all round, and had a sad tinge about it, a bit like a fairground after the fair I suppose.
But the natter and the music were great. and I think markinpdx was made to feel a little better about going back to the States, because at least he will be goin' back with aussie dollars! ;-) and...he gets to go to sessions with Kevin Burke from here on!

Re: John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

It was also Aoife's birthday, and the unofficial Sydney meeting of the Australian-Irish-American Royal Wedding Fanciers Society.

But let's not derail this discussion. It's been a lot of fun hosting the Kellys and I'm sad to think how long it could be before I see them all in a room together again. And as for the Aussie dollars, I'd trade a stack of them for another weekend like Easter. Perhaps I will, in July 2010. :)

2012

All this moving out has thrown me into a time loop.

If the world hasn't ended by 2012, of course.

Re: John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

It's a year since I was in Sydney, but would just like to add praise for Aoife Kelly - what a lass, eh?

Re: John, Johnny and Aoife Kelly

tunes continued
in part 2 of the weekend Gaelic sage in Sydney, last night with a Dublin songs night with the Blackwater band, where Siobhan O'Donnell from Sligo was 'persuaded' to sing a couple of songs, followed by a session that fired up after midnight out on the back balcony of the Gaelic overlooking the neighbour-free commercial rooftops of the south Sydney city CBD, and featuring some fairly esoterically eclectic contemporary songs (which some people said didn't happen, ok) and deadly tunes until some time after 4am, on a balmy Sydney autumn night. Brilliant. Place to play tunes, folks, if you're passing through Sydney.
