Re: Tune ID

Interesting! Sorry, at least initially, no, but I've a slew of marches scattered about and I'd like to know myself. Where is the recording from?

Thanks, I'm enjoying this with a very wide smile... I'll return if I find anything.

Re: Tune ID

He probably heard somebody playing the Atholl Highlanders a few years before and didn't write it down. :)

Re: Tune ID

The recording is from a tape of John Doherty playing at the Golden Gate, Carrick, Co. Donegal, May 22, 1974

Re: Tune ID

Your Mediafire link just pops up an advert about checking my credit report and doesn't do anything when I click on the download link.

I knew there was a reason why I stopped clicking on Mediafire links years ago.

Re: Tune ID

I learnt to play the second tune in the sixties. I say second tune because I never heard the first two parts that Doherty plays on the link. That makes me believe that the first two parts are a separate tune The second tune is a four part pipe band march whose name at the moment escapes me but I have it on a Bobby Macleod LP. Unfortunately he includes it with two other pipe marches under the title of The Gatherings and of course it is played as a pipe march (much slower than Johnny Doherty plays it)

Re: Tune ID

The first tune is "The Queen's Welcome to Invercauld" by James Scott Skinner:

I recognise the second tune but I can't recall it at the moment, and I'm away from home, so I can't rummage around. It'll come to me...

Re: Tune ID

On the final line, that " } " should be a " | ". Sorry.

Re: Tune ID

Nice lead in Free Reed, and a lovely conclusion nigelg. You should have been the first thing to come to my mind as likely being able to resolve this, but I had too many other distractions.

Again, thanks for the earful mieskelly, and for resolution nigel. I hadn't yet managed to set other pressing problems aside yet to go exploring...

I'll now go listen some more and chase up other listens for these two, thanks...
