And now for something completely different... Did a museum gig, very fun. Played Danny Boy for some old folks -- I'm not too proud to do it -- and got them singing.
On the trip home I started to feel some ominous and unfortunately familiar symptoms, so I dropped the harp off at home, popped another nitroglycerin and went to the emergency room. Tests, then more tests. I'm now "resting comfortably", as they say, with a triple bypass scheduled for Monday. NOT my idea of a good time, although they did give me a green gown in honor of the day.
To those of you who are the praying type, I could use some prayers. If you're more secular or even irreverent (irreverence? here?!?), positive thoughts are welcome. Thanks.
Tracie--it could've been far worse. They might have asked you to play the Unicorn Song. There's not surgery or other cure for that.
Sounds like you've been coping with the symptoms before. Hold this fast to your thoughts: your heart will feel young again with the improved circulation after surgery. Friends of mine have come out the other side of this feeling so much better--it's a start-over.
I just wrapped up 8 hours of gigs today, and I'm out tomorrow for more. We'll be sure to play A Health to the Ladies for you. Be well and heal up fast!
No need to say "best of luck to ya" as there's no luck involved! They'll patch you right up and kick yer ass back out on the street in no time. Revcovery is an ordeal-no way to sugar coat that but take it easy you'll be fine. And never stop playing- it's wonderful therapy!
Best wishes and kind thoughts to you. I had a quadruple bypass surgery a little over a year ago. No problems since. The surgery was around Halloween, and by New Year's Day was cleared to do anything I wanted, including shovelling two feet of snow from the driveway. It's a hassle, but a lot better than the alternative!
I had a few weeks when I couldn't lift anything heavier than a milk carton while the breast bone heals. And, it is not uncommon when they separate your ribs to get to the heart that they will pinch a major nerve in your right arm. Mine felt like I was constantly hitting my funny bone and my right hand was numb for a few weeks. But, it all eventually gets back to normal, with no lingering effects.
Modern medical specialization is a great thing. Your surgeon will have performed your procedure many, many times before. Prayers and good wishes are both sent your way.
Get well. Rest up.
And don't try to play "Those Endearing Young Charms" on a xylophone while wearing a red devil costume now that you have nitro roaming through your system.
Welcome to the zipper club.
The important thing to remember is that you won't know a thing about it
I had my op about 5 weeks ago and I'm back out walking the dog already.
Good luck
While not a member of the zipper club, I am a card carrying member of the roto-rooter club, and can vouch for how much better it feels to have everything flowing freely! Wishing you luck and a speedy recovery!
roto rooter...zipper...we've all either been there or are heading there. I believe that we are lucky to have such great medical technology nowadays. My daughter, a Phd in bio, is a cancer researcher at Stanford U. and tells me all the wonderful yet unpublicized discoveries that happen every day. Good luck to you, Tracie.
will be thinking of you. just did a fairly serious surgery myself and am working hard at rehab. it's hard, but we are indeed lucky to have the care. hang in there, and do your best, and it will be good to be done with it!
We did one last night at the Catholic church - I asked what they wanted to end the evening, expecting to play Soldiers Tale.
Athenry , Danny Boy ..... they all cry.
At least they all joined in ..... most of them wouldn't know the Irish National Anthem.
I'm off the beer for Lent, but St Paddy gave me a dispensation. Hopefully, Our Lady will also give me one next week for the Annunciation.
Not my favorite way to spend St Patrick's Day

Re: Not my favorite way to spend St Patrick's Day
Hmm - "museum gig"? I think I'll keep that one out of my vocabulary. I do care homes frequently.
Something to look forward to: Meeting groups of thesessioners
to discuss our operations and compare scars.
And when we move into museums, hopefully the next generation will come and play diddly tunes for us.
In the meantime, Tracie, have a speedy recovery.
