Le Cheile- The Reformation!

Le Cheile- The Reformation!

Le Cheile have reformed!
The original band consisted of the late Raymond Roland, Liam Farrell, Danny Meehan, John Roe, the late PJ Crotty and Kevin Boyle. They played in London in the seventies and recorded 2 albums.

Raymond Roland and PJ Crotty are replaced by accordian player extraordinaire - Andy Martyn and flute playing maestro - Paul Gallagher.

Worth taking a look at the newly reformed group. They have released a cd called 'Out Of The West'

Re: Le Cheile- The Reformation!

Oh how lovely!

Thanks for those two links tempest. A trip down memory lane.

Shudder shudder, it makes me feel how blessed to still be here, when you think of Raymond's and so many others' passing.

One of the first photographs in the sequence took me right back to The Britannia in Hackney where I had some fantastic nights with Danny Meehan.

The last time I saw Danny was at Jimmy McHugh's funeral in Glasgow; there were a number of sessioners there.

Also there was a lovely flute player Alan O'Leary who played at The Kilkenny, Wimbledon. I travelled down and played in some very nice sessions. Anyone know if he still plays there?

All the best

Re: Le Cheile- The Reformation!

That really takes me back, some familiar faces in the clips and a great familiar sound. Liam Farrell was the first guy I ever heard playing trad on the banjo. Must have been late fifties early sixties. I often give the 1965 LP - Saturday Night at the Ceili with the Raymond Roland Quartet a spin just for old times sake. It's full of fried eggs but still enjoyable.

Nice playing on your videos Brian. Are you traveling up to
Canberra for the National? I hear the Fitzgeralds will be there,
John and Aoife Kelly, possibly Jody Moran and many
ordinary session bar animals like me

Re: Le Cheile- The Reformation!

Hi there Mark!

Thanks for your kind comments. Unfortunately I cannot be at The Nationals.

Fortunately, that’s because my fortunes have improved and after a few years of struggle I’m now in a secure position of work. The owners have asked if I could help out, and given that they’re giving me the whole weekend for The Hobart Fleadh, 11th-14th March, no contest!

I had such a wonderful time playing with Paddy and Nicki and the crew awhile back and am so looking forward to catching up with them.

Also, I’m sure I’ll get over to play at The National sometime, and now that I can plan ahead, and be able to afford to travel I’ll be taking up the kind invites from so many people here in Australia...Donough look out!

And to all for the kind messages received

Go raibh mile maith agaoibh!

All the best

Brian x

Re: Le Cheile- The Reformation!

Tom Madden was the singer with Le Cheile for a time, and recorded with the band. He played guitar and 5-string banjo.
