Willie Clancy summer school

Willie Clancy summer school

Hiya everybody :)
this summer holiday I'm planning to go to Willie Clancy s.ch. but wonder, in what level of playing an instrument do I have to be, if I want to participate on daily classes (in my case tin whistle) without feeling like a complete idiot because of my not-enough-developed-yet playing skills. How advanced do I have to be? Do I have to be somehow fast? Or do I have to know everything about every ornamentation? I'm the begginer and I'm little afraid... Was somebody of you in Willie Clancy week as a begginer?

Re: Willie Clancy summer school

Hi there, be not afraid. You should be able to play a bit alright but you will be graded on the first day and probably put into a beginners class. Only problem some of the beginners classes are full of small children which can be a bit disruptive. Don't worry about speed as the teacher will teach you either by ear or notes and you will learn the tune slowly. Of course some people will be faster but don't be intimidated. The teachers are usually very good. There is one particularly good teacher, Peter Phelan, but don't know if he takes beginners. He has great experience as a teacher of whistle and great patience. Main thing is to enjoy the experience and don't try to learn all the tunes in the week, you will learn them later on during the year.

Best wishes

Re: Willie Clancy summer school

Peter 'Piper' Phelan tends to teach at a fairly advanced level - lucky for the more advanced player, but a pity for beginners as I'm sure he's an excellent teacher at that level as well.

He knows how to savour a note.

I'll shut up now - he might be reading this.
