1. Have you tried removing the drones?
2. Take off your ear-muffs
3. Do not use a King Edward Spud as a pick. You might get good chips but it kills the sound.
4. I 'm at a loss to understand the 'ee' at the end of 'banjo'. Is that the sound of your recorder screaming? If so, are you THAT bad?
5. If all the above (a) fail to improve the sound or (b) are true, try playing a skinless bodhran. You'll find you'll be welcomed everywhere.
Three dots - there just isn't a short cut I'm afraid. Continue to listen to other banjo players until their playing and musical expressions become soaked into your brain. After some time spent on the instrument, you'll find the sound you're looking for.
Bail ó Dhia oraibh! Greetings all, and a Very Happy st. David’s Day to all from that very beautiful part of the world. I’ve spent many, many happy days there, and had some beautiful music too!
A propos the post, Lissagriffin, you mentioned an obsession with dots, Michael and others suggesting a bodhrán.
Close, but not quite!

Banjo playing
Banjo playing
I have listened to recordings of myself playing and they just don't sound very banjoee..
Is there anything I could do to make it sound more banjoee?

Re: Banjo playing
It's probably because it's got no strings and no neck ... and you're hitting it with a stick.

Re: Banjo playing
From the username, are we to infer a dots obsession here?

Re: Banjo playing
I think banjoee means having the essence of banjoness, as in the concept behind the following joke:
What's brown and sticky? Answer: A stick.

Re: Banjo playing
Doesn't "banjoee" come from the sessions around Mcknowall's neck of the woods, where they ban the joee skins?

Re: Banjo playing
When a trainer gives you some training, you become a trainee.
So presumably, when a banjoer gives you some banjoing you become a banjoee.

Re: Banjo playing
You could try:
tightening the head
getting a different head
getting a different bridge
try different strings
or as many of the above posts suggest.....you could just count your blessings.

Re: Banjo playing
If you want to make it sound really banjoee, first make sure your instrument has five strings. Then marry your cousin.
