I am a long standing *old* LĂșnasa fan and in particular a Donogh Hennessy fan. I became aware of The Alan Kelly Quartet through my interest in the playing of Donogh Hennessy. It recently came to my attention that he had been cut out of the band's facebook profile page.. has he left that band?
When I left a comment about it, it got deleted and I was "unfriended"
Is that the treatment fans deserve?
I can now say, I will never buy a cd, or attend a gig of the Alan Kelly Quartet, nor shall I encourage any of my friends to do so.
Is there any role left for the simple fan of Irish Music?
or have some of these bands just gotten too big for their boots?
regards,
awfully un-impressed in Offaly!
I would consider myself to be a fan of Donogh Hennessy's as I've bought every recording he's ever done (including Alan Kelly's "Out Of The Blue"). I'm a guitar player myself and am completely inspired by Donogh's playing, though I'll never EVER be as good.
Perhaps you're right though,
dis-illusioned in Offaly :(
You are fine Loughboro. No problem being a fan of Donogh or any musician that moves you. Its an Irish thing. You are allowed be a massive fan of Led Zeppelin or some other awful noise machine but its not cool to say your a fan of Lunasa. More like you and we wont throw away whats good .
I have been a long time admirer of Donogh Hennessy's playing, and also had my time of mourning when he moved on from Lunasa. Who knows how or why that happened and who knows how or why he's now moved on from Alan Kelly's quartet. Bands do come and go and some of them have near constant lineup changes. I hope this one wasn't as acrimonious as your experience suggests. Heres' to hoping that we will soon get to enjoy his playing in some other settings that that will be even more enjoyable for us and him.
well said!
he has played with Pauline Scanlon for a long time and does with her band Lumiere. They are super but my favourite thing that he does as a player is back tunes and I miss hearing him with LĂșnasa. I was venting earlier but stand by what I said, it was just plain rude!
I'll be keeping an eye out for him!
uplifted in Offaly!
there's a few recent clips on youtube of Hennessy, McSherry and McGoldrick. Hopefully it's a goer, now THAT would be a trio I think everyone remotely interested in Irish music would go to see!

Apparently he is to work with Kyle Carey and maybe he is concentrating on studio work/recording/producing.
