Glasgow..... a nice place

Glasgow..... a nice place

Haven't been on this in months..... dropped the 'flute' from the username.

Was in glasgow for the Jimmy McHugh Memorial Concert , my christmas present from the girlfriend..... fantastic weekend.

The concert was really good with some great players such as Dave Sheridan, Eamonn Cotter and Alan Costello and others and you could hear them all playing in sessions in the jurys inn and it was a great experience. It happens to be on at the same time as Celtic Connections so people should give it a look in. Pretty damn good christmas present!

I've never been to glasgow and its a really beatifull city, I was playing some tunes in aberdeen as well and I have to say my scottish tune repitoire is going to have to expand!

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

That's a shame - means I missed you twice, "premier". Where and when were you in Aberdeen ?

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

I was there, and go most Mondays, but left early. I'm f@@ked if I'm going to play in a session with 5 guitars.
[ Just out of interest, does this ever happen anywhere else ? What is the attraction of being the 5th guitarist in a session ? ].
Please let me know the next time you're there, even if it's not a Monday.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

We arrived at 9.30 or so and the place was mobbed, guitars and two fella on those boxes you sit on ehm slap...... but in fairness after 11.30 everybody packed up and went leaving about 6 (guitar, flute, pipes and and a few fiddles) of us and the music was grand... Alistair on the fiddle has some great stuff, I let you know the next time I'm in the 'deen

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

I had a great time at the concert myself. It was the first Jimmy McHugh Memorial Concert I had been to despite living in Glasgow for most of them - not sure why I had missed previous ones.

The sessions in Jurys afterwards were also great albeit it was a late one, eventually stopping playing at 5.30am. I gather others kept on playing until after 7am though.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

Well there you go then. You must have been in that session in the lobby with all the flutes. I was playing in the bar just next to the lobby.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

I was in the session in the restaurant. Premier - do you not think that going from the Jury's session to the Blue Lamp session was going from the sublime to the ridiculous ? That was certainly my feeling.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

We started off exactly where you were playing. Didn't quite work out though for one reason or another so we moved on.

I'll take the banjos and bouzouki, thanks very much, "zippydw" :)

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

I left Duries at 2am as I'd spent all day doing music stuff and wanted to be alert enough to spend Sunday with the family. Two freinds of mine (father & son) said they left about 8am and walked back to Paisley (junior carrying a Piano Accordeon).

NCFA, likewise my first time at a Jimmy McHugh memorial, it usually clashes with my wife's birthday but seemed to be later this year. Also first time I'd been in babities session for 5 or 6 years.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

Kenny, after you left, there were 5 guitars, 3 banjos, 2 cajones.

However, the cat scratchers and snake charmers did manage to hold their own until Alistair and the Twedllemeister got there.

Premier - did you guys manage the Ryanair Session? Did they charge you for it? LOL

Monday nights tend to be a bit like that in the Lampie- mobbed from about 9 until 11 then thinning out. It's mostly due the the SC&T classes which run on a Monday night.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

It occurred to me later that there were 8 session.org members, - that I know of - in Jury's last Saturday night. That's more than we've sometimes had at the Willie Week gatherings.

Re: Glasgow..... a nice place

That was my 3rd jimmy McHugh weekend a fine concert and tunes a plenty in Jury's late into the night, I stopped at 3.30! But managed the full Sharkys experience on Sunday...a week later and just about recovered!
