Does anyone here, more than likely of the banjo or fiddling persuasion, delve into or play keenly in American Old Time Music? As distinct from country and bluegrass. If so, is there a discussion forum/tunes database similar to that of the session.org?
I've started playing old time [five string]banjo of late, having just nabbed the clawhammer playing style, which I found really difficult. Never been more proud of myself.
their forums include a section titled "playing styles: clawhammer/oldtime" with gobs of threads, gobs of information, and gobs of really, really nice, knowledgeable clawhammer banjo characters.
i don't recall if the "sugar in the gourd" oldtime site has a forum, but it's really great.
donald zepp's musical instrument shop in north carolina, which is mostly a clawhammer banjo hotbed, has wonderful mp3s and video clips which are also on youtube.....
oh, me, oh, my, we do love us some clawhammer banjo......
I actually first got interested in ITM from playing clawhammer banjo. It's really neat to hear the different takes on tunes that are in both traditions.
I know the feeling surly. I started up picking clawhammer style for a while, but couldn't figure out why it was so difficult to claw fast (old-time-wise!) tunes. Had to redo it with the bum ditty on the down stroke. What a revelation! Opened up a new world of musical meditation.
I love playing trad on the tenor banjo, but I have to say, there's nothing more relaxing, musically, than just blasting away in an old-timey session to a few songs and/or tunes.
If I'm messing around with the 5-string on my own, I can go into an almost trance-like state while frailing.
Keep it up! The banjohangout.org is your place to be for clawing
Our guitarist has his own band that he play's a lot of bluegrass and what not in. He occasionally starts singing a song and we end up playing along with him. It's quite fun. :D
It's simply a site is for players & lovers of Old Time Music, geared mainly towards those folks on this side of the Pond!
It only has 265 members, so a Spring Chicken compared to the Mustard Board, but it does have 440 photos, 354 videos & a fairly active forum, although nowhere nearly as active as this one.
Sadly, there is no facility for a tune database but I'm sure you'll pick up loads of tips from the videos & much encouragement from many of the enthusiastic members.
Well, I've lived in Appalachia for my entire six@#$-mumble years, so, yes, old-time music has been in the air I breathe forever. I learned clawhammer banjo back in the mid-seventies and have recently been trying to re-learn after a few years of neglect and a neurological setback. I've thought about latching onto some of the old-time forums, but I really don't need yet another time sink. As for old-time tune databases, I've always felt that it's generally pretty close to impossible to notate old-time tunes - harder even than Irish tunes.

And there's always http://www.mne.psu.edu/lamancusa/tunes.htm (Old Time Fiddle Tunes), http://www.loc.gov/topics/content.php?subcat=15 (Library of Congress site) and http://www.foaotmad.org.uk/ (for OT enthusiasts in the British Isles), but don't take it seriously, it's supposed to be fun!
