ITM Album Of The Year 2010

ITM Album Of The Year 2010

I'd love to hear what the members here would consider the best album they purchased this year.
It would also give us all an idea of what to consider buying in the new year.
My own favourite by far, in any genre, is A Moment Of Madness by
Brendan Begley and Caoimhín ó Raghallaigh. Some other great ones too.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Other great albums from the past year would include:

Edel Fox - Chords & Beryls
Seamus Begley & Tim Edey - Disgrace Notes
John McSherry - Soma

Of course if you are looking for stuff from the New Year onwards then you need look no further than:

"The Friday Night Sessions: Traditional Music From Glasgow" which is due out Jan/Feb time. It will revolutionise what you think of this music. :-)

Agree with "NCFA". - "NicGaviskey"

- just ahead of Dave Sheridan's "Drivin' Leitrim Timber".

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

One of my favourites this year was Gabe McVarish's "Eclection."

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

For songs: Karan Casey and John Doyle - Exiles Return.

For tunes: Soma, as mentioned above, though John's still got me searching for all the Led Zeppelin references.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Liz Carroll's Double Play gets my vote. Picked it up at CIAW this year after seeing her play live onstage and at some sessions. I find the album to be fantastic, though can see where some might take exception to it from a "pure drop" perspective.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Yep, nice one, Latticino, but 'Double Play' was released in 2009!

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Good point.

Of course the OP did say: "I'd love to hear what the members here would consider the best album they purchased this year", not specifically albums released this year, but I agree his intent must have been for recent releases (or the list might grow too large to review...).

And I probably should have mentioned that it wasn't only Liz's album, but a collaboration with John Doyle, as the name clearly suggests.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Tom McElvogue's "The Long Hard Road" with Paddy Kerr.

A plug? No. Not yet. That will come in due course. Not sure yet about iTunes availability but that would be nice.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

My two favorites were "The Living Stream" by Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch, and "Grove Lane" by Joe Derrane and John McGann. I think those came out this year, at least I didn't get hold of them until this year! 8-)

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Thanks to you all for the replies.
I download most of my music now and a good few of those albums you mentioned were already in my saved box. I enjoyed listening to samples from the Nicgaviskey record and will definitely be checking it out further.
Thanks again.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

I could certainly go along with NicGaviskey. Very nice and extremely well done.

But I would like to put in Joanie Madden's new one 'A Galway Afternoon' for consideration.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

hmmm, a lot of non-traditional albums mentioned....

NicGaviskey gets another vote. Best pure ITM album this year.

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

Depends on how how you define traditional...

# Posted on January 7th 2011 by AlBrown

Re: ITM Album Of The Year 2010

That is true. Personally, I feel the word is self-explanatory. If we are going to call it "traditional Irish music", then it should be just that - traditional.

Otherwise, we should call it something different, such as "Celtic". Celtic music and traditional Irish music are 2 different things, and there's nothing wrong with that, but they are different - so we should make the distinction, in my opinion.
