Tune in for Christmas Day ceol, craic, wine and pies with the Cavan-man!
SHANNONSIDE NORTHERN SOUND 5pm–7pm Irish Time CHRISTMAS NIGHT SPECIAL
Ho ho ho! A Christmas Night is for songs and stories — and there’s nowhere better to get music, song and the craic aplenty than with the Cavan-man himself, Martin Donohoe, who’ll be hosting a bumper Seisiún Ceoil na Nollag Christmas Night radio special on Shannonside Northern Sound! http://www.shannonside.ie
That’s right, tune in live from 5pm to 7pm on the big day to join Martin and the gang in Donohoe’s Mince Pie Cottage, where the tunes, the songs, the recitations, the wit and the laughter will be in full flow as the Cavan-man himself sees to it that none of his guests are left short of pies and parsnip wine!
Among the all-star line-up expected to drop in will be the great Eleanor Shanley of De Dannan fame, and singer/songwriting celeb Charlie McGettigan — what a Leitrim double act! Aoife Murray, David Cadden and Mickey McDonnell will be on hand with a few more songs, while RTE Radio and Irish Music Magazine legend Aidan O’Hara will be joined by his wife Joyce with some lovely oul’ Christmas favourites.
Storyteller Eamonn Maguire will have us all in stitches, and what would it be without the king of the lilters Seamus Fay, who’s always on top form!
The Christmas Night Wind That Blows special will have reels, jigs and ceol galore with tunes from accordionist Philip Clarke, fiddler Olive Kilbane, drummer Martin Murphy, bodhran and bones man Trevor Bury, and mandolin king Joao, all the way from Portugal (they’re comin’ a long way to be sure to be in Martin’s Mince Pie Cottage!). Gareth and Seamus Tierney on accordion and flute will be there as well, flying the flag for youth and the musicians of the future.
Memories of Fleadh 2010 will be revisited with Jack Keyes, the great man himself, who might also be giving a hint of what’s in store for 2011. Fleadh goers may have been amazed at some of the innovations that made 2010 the unprecedented success that it was, but they can all expect even more surprises from the heart of Breffni in next year’s re-run, Jack assures us.
Speaking of surprises, the Seisiún Ceoil na Nollag show will have a few of its own, with Sean Nós North Pole dancers Donal Keogan, Mickey Shields, Catriona O’Reilly, Brendan Fay, Betty Leddy, Sean & Mary Galligan, Paddy Ronaghan and Marian and Terry Crowe all steppin’ it out in full festive season spirit!
Ah, sure it’s going to be very warm in the Mince Pie Cottage all right, where Charlie McGettigan will be on the parsnip wine early, but still singing from the heart! Comhaltas chairman Gussie Moyles will have his work cut out drivin’ them all home in the Fleadh Bus, especially if they get enough of the wine and pies! And you can be sure that the Cavan-man himself will be fit for the leaba on a Christmas night!
So pull up to the fire, uncork a bottle yourselves, and relax with the wine and the wireless for the live Ceoil na Nollag Special on Shannonside Northern Sound Radio, Christmas Night, 5pm to 7pm. And with satellite sound recording by Mike “The Power FM” Mulvihill, don’t forget to text, email and remind your family and friends — close to home and around the world — to tune in live or via the World Wide Web!
Christmas is for children — but it’s for grownups too, so never mind the headaches and defrost those weary hearts this Christmas with the Cavan-man Martin Donohoe and his crew of happy musicians and mince pie munchers!
Broadcasting to the Border counties, Midlands and West and on the Worldwide Web, Shannonside Northern Sound; with thanks to McQuaid’s Opticians and Connect Hearing shops in Cavan and Monaghan, sponsors of The Wind that Blows.
