New versions of Tunepal

New versions of Tunepal

In case you missed it, I released new versions of Tunepal and these are now available on the Android marketplace and App store:

New features:
Tune editing & composition tools in all the apps
Now 16,700 tunes in the database
Search single or multiple tunebooks
Get tune discographies and search youtube for recordings of tunes
An iPad optimised version that takes advantage of the big screen
Pause and restart playback of tunes
All the apps can be switched between Irish and English interfaces

The new website is also live with:
A new, better looking cross platform Java applet
Ability to search by title as well as by playing

Thanks to all who came to the launch on 15 December. Check out the photos:

Re: New versions of Tunepal

I haven't tried the new version as yet, but the original version for ipod is excellent. Keep up the good work. It is a great tool for promoting and encouraging traditional music.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Hey Bryan,

I haven't been able to get the new version of the site to work on Mac. When I first tried it, it loaded, and would record, but there was no search button. Shortly after that, Apple released a new Java, and I tried installing that, and now I can't even get the applet to load.

What version of Java should work on Mac? I have 3 different versions of Java installed that I can select from, but none seem to work. (1.6.0_22-b04-307, 1.5.0_26-b03, and 1.4.2_22)

I can always use my iPhone, but the site is handier for me a lot of times...

Re: New versions of Tunepal

I'm a little bit convinced that Apple's implemenation of java has some trouble, particularly when it comes to applets. I had a hell of a time with strange bugs when I was working on a project last year, and some features of it still aren't working on some mac configurations.
Apple insists that there's no problem, nothing to see here, move along, but I would suggest extensive QA testing on the mac platforms when deploying an applet.

Bryan - if I can ask, what's your development environment? I was working with two guys who were both using Eclipse on Windows machines, I wonder if that might be part of the issue.

ObTrad: I first started listening to trad music at St. Michael's Alley in Palo Alto, which is where Gosling did a lot of the original design of Java, and where he came up with the xCAFEBABE "magic number" that starts all java class files.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

I can't get it to run on my Mac either and I am not cool enough to own an iPhone or Android phone.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Emily, you've got it the wrong way around. You're too cool for that stuff. (This from the man still using a ten year old Nokia...)

Re: New versions of Tunepal

New version doesn't work on my Mac either - the old version did (sort of), Shame really cos it was very useful.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Guys

Please go and update your macs's. It works fine on my Mac mini and my Mac book pro. Maybe it needs Snow leopard? What os are you on and what browser? Also Leopard or Snow Leopard?

Re: New versions of Tunepal

I've had problems with it using Firefox (3.6.13) on a recent iMac running OS 10.6.5, but it works fine with Safari (5.0.3).

Re: New versions of Tunepal

I'm running OSX 10.5.8.

Updates...yeah, that's sort of another problem. My computer has decided it doesn't want to update itself anymore. Whenever I ask it to check for software updates in its little software update program, it tells me a networking error has occurred and I need to see if I can connect to the internet. As I'm posting here, I'm obviously connected to the bloody internet.

Anyone fancy solving that one?

Re: New versions of Tunepal

GaryAMartin

It doesnt and never did work with Firefox on Mac hence the "Mac users, please view this page in Safari. " on the home page

TheSilverSpear - Give the mac away and get yourself a Windows 7 machine.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Don't listen to him, Emily. I have to use one of those things at work.

When it comes to Windows, here's my advice:

Re: New versions of Tunepal

hi, just wondering if there will ever be a version for symbian (xpress music 5800 nokia)? fantastic app!

Re: New versions of Tunepal

I can't get the new version of the site to work for me. OS: Windows Vista. I tried on Google Chrome, Firefox and IE. It says it's recording but it's not picking up anything from the mic so I can't transcribe it and so I can't search. It's a shame because it was the best and fastest way for me to search for tunes... :(

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Bryan,

Not a chance. My Mac in its old age might be getting a wee bit moody (aren't we all?) but it has nothing on PCs, which become deranged psycho document destroying machines of doom.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Yeah. I remember/notice that tiny reminder every time, after trying it two or three times in Firefox, and then forget it the next time. Over and over and over again. Is there an easy way to add code to detect the browser and provide a huge warning if it's unsupported?

Re: New versions of Tunepal

What a wonderful Android app. It recognized the half a dozen tunes I played without the puzzled looks I get when people hear me play.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Hey Bryan, I emailed you a Java console dump.

I'm running Leopard (10.5.8).

As previously mentioned, the old version of the site worked for me. My first test with the new version of the site allowed me to record, but there was no search button.

A subsequent Java update has broken it completely.

I have 3 versions of Java to choose from:

Java SE 6 (1.6.0_22-b04-307) - Result: Java fails to load (sigh).

J2SE 1.4.2 (1.4.2._22) - Result: Red X in upper left corner

J2SE 5.0 (1.5.0_26-b03) - Result: Error - Click for Details (I won't bore you with them here... But I emailed them to you. In short, it looks like it's missing a Class definition)

Anyway, hope you figure it out! :-)

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Just to verify that someone on the better platform :) (Mac of course) had no problem with Tunepal on Safari. I am running the latest OS though so YMMV

# Posted on December 24th 2010 by cboody

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Yeah, cboody, it appears as though maybe Snow Leopard has something to do with it. It's just weird that it broke when they updated the site for those of us back on Leopard. I emailed Bryan the Java console log, which showed which class failed to load...

Just out of curiosity, can you look and see what Java version you're running? (Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences. Look at the list of versions under the General tab, and let us know what they are in order, maybe?)

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Rev - I don't think Bryan's missing anything, I think Apple's JRE is defective, at least up through 10.5.8, and the defect shows up precisely in applets. So much for "write once, run anywhere", huh?
We ran into a similar problem last year - most of our testers running macs reported fail-to-load, and the ones who were able to load were running Snow Leopard. Oddly enough, it worked like a champ on my machine (10.5.8) when I ran it in iCab - no other browser, though. The code compiled fine on my machine, and I was able to run it in test harness, but in the applet context it failed.
Unfortunately, a lot of people are running 10.5, so saying "just upgrade" is going to eliminate a lot of the user base, even if the latest version has a less-flawed JRE. Just like saying "you can't use your good browser" is going to annoy a lot of people - I don't know many mac users who like Safari.

We ended up getting things to work by rolling back to compile at 1.4. Just about everybody was able to run that one, and we didn't lose any functionality. A few things had to be rewritten, but not much. That might be worth a try.

Re: New versions of Tunepal

If you start a terminal and run:

java -version

It will tell you what version of Java you are running. I am running the following:

java version "1.6.0_22"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_22-b04-307-10M3261)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 17.1-b03-307, mixed mode)

On Snow Leopard. We did try and rewrite the applet in Flash to get around these kinds of issues, but had to abandon the project and go back to Java

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Yeah, Jon, I agree that Apple's JRE is messed up. But it's just weird that TunePal worked OK until the site upgrade.

I did actually try going back to older versions of Java 1.6, to see what happened. (Not a process for the faint of heart, because it includes some manual removal of files, etc) But I couldn't get it to work. (the downgrade or the TunePal site).

It's possible that update 8 for 10.5.8 hosed everything.

And Bryan, interesting that you bring that up. This is precisely the reason I stopped coding Java and starting coding Flash about 12 years ago, before Flash was even a decent development platform.

You've obviously got Objective C under your belt (unless you just wrote the iPhone version in an HTML-based framework, like PhoneGap, or something). So how about a native Mac standalone application? ;-)

# Posted on December 24th 2010 by Reverend

Re: New versions of Tunepal

Not likely there will be Nokia native version, but there is now a version optimised for phones available if you go to http://tunepal.org on your phone. It lets you search for tunes by typing a phrase of music in ABC or by typing a title.

Try it out and let me know how it works for you!

Re: New versions of Tunepal

FYI:

Updating to the latest version of Java on a Mac should solve all your problems:

Would be great if Nokia could do the same as HTC and I-phone :o)
