On the Fly

On the Fly

Most of my learning - and playing - of trad music - and it may be said, a certain portion of my professional transferable skills, have been picked up on the fly. I read or listen to some pumped up guru, take what I need, apply it then move on, then repeating the process. On the move all the time. All I can say is as to how this differs from normal textbook learning, is, it is not a great technique for passing exams (although I have managed that) but it has worked for me for several decades.
I am now considering moving into a slightly different area. Would you think, can this anarchic strategy work on other boards?

Re: On the Fly

< listen to some pumped up guru,>

More or less what I had to do at fleadhs in the beginning --
But I would not call - Tommy Peoples, Francie Mooney, Ben Lennon, And Gerry O'Connor {Fiddle } - pumped up guru's...
Although I do something like what you saying to learn tune's now,
over the Internet ...

Re: On the Fly

Woah Jim, Good man yerself, neither would I call any of those you mentioned, pumped up gurus. Jeesus not at all a single one of them. Maybe I was being a bit cynical, but also maybe some of ye know what I mean.

"...And Gerry O'Connor {Fiddle }"

As long as it's not the god forsaken evil thing he does on a full moon with the other thing.

Re: On the Fly

To be an autodidact is to own your path.
You can't blame others for your failure,
but it makes success overwhelmingly joyful.

Re: On the Fly

there's only so much you can learn from reading textbooks and listening to lectures. Most people learn and understand best by actually *doing* the thing they're after.

Re: On the Fly

I am starting to think that in the long run it hardly matters how you first learn something. I am always hearing things differently over the years and adjusting and relearning as I go. It is great to have so many different experiences to draw from. I can hardly remember for most tunes whether I first learned them by listening or from dots or even what instrument I was playing when I first learned it.

Re: On the Fly

Eósaph,
At first I wasn't quite sure why you were going on about "full moons" and "god forsaken evil things", but then the penny dropped: Jim isn't dissing the banjo by writing "fiddle" in brackets - in case you are unaware of the fact, there are actually two trad musicians who share the name Gerry O'Connor: one plays the fiddle (I was only after listening to his "Journeyman" CD today in the car as a matter of fact....) and the other, as we all know, plays the banjo.

Re: On the Fly

Exam results are for the benefit of other people -- it is what you know that matters. Get your information where you can and don't do what someone else says unless you know the reason for doing it. The graveyards are full of indispensable people and pumped-up gurus.
