Greetings - I just received my custom made mandolin from Keith Newell (Oregon, USA). It is the "Roger Landes" model and is a 15.5 inch scale with a spruce top and walnut back/sides. I have posted a build thread and a sound review on the Mandolin Cafe <http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?68239-Newell-RL-model-review>. It is a great instrument and I thought some of you might like to hear about it.
'tis a shame that the remorseless and unappeasable rise of the fretted string instrument in Irish diddley music during the 20C can culminate in a 21st century statement saying that such an instrument can be "perfect" for this music.
I mean that the rise of fretted string instruments is unrelenting in it's lack of regret or guilt for what is lost. They are unable, because of their architecture, to concede to the music ... despite the music's conciliatory efforts
I can see what you say althought I have nothing against fretted instruments especially if hooked up to a powerful amp and distortion pedal! Anyway, wasn't it bands that you have championed in the past (Bothies etc) that let to this relentless rise. I think that the concilliatory acceptance was very beneficial to ITM in general, wasn't it?
It would be prudent to point out that I cannot play a fretless stringed instrument but I do have a purple fiddle which is good for scaring away vermin in wintertime.
When I made the suggestion some time ago that mandolins etc. may not be ideal instruments for ITM, I seem to remember the reply from Llig being to the effect that the nature of the instrument used doesn't matter...
The shifting sands on which some of these discussions are based become a little more apparent.
It is interesting how a post about a mandolin and it's quality transmogrifies into a discussion of what is right and wrong in ITM. Sad, really - it seems like staying on the subject is difficult in many of thesession.org posts.
As the person who conceived of and commissioned said instrument I will second irishrhythm's comments. I am quite pleased with mine, which is the prototype for the model.
I would just like to add that "ilig leahcim"'s sniping is particularly asinine, but I would expect nothing less from him. And "Prof. Prlwytzkofsky" jumps in to make sure "ilig" is not the only one hurling sh*te.
But it's really easy for a coward to hurl sh*te when hiding behind the protection of an alias, isn't it?

I'll weep for what is lost.

Is the fretless bass acceptable, llig?

Be thankful llig.
If it wasn't for mandolins and bouzoukis, they's all be playing guitars.

Re: Keith Newell Mandolin - perfect for ITRAD
Don't you think you supplied that angle of discussion with an opening gambit when you declared the instrument 'perfect for IRTRAD'?
Be prepared to be questioned when making statements like that. Don't whine when it happens.
