Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

I need some information on Siobhan O'Donnell. Appreciate your help.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

According to Karen Tweed she is a flute player and singer from London (source: Karen Tweed's Irish Choice - a tune book edited by Dave Mallinson publications; tunes including Siobhan O'Donnell's no.1 and no. 2 , both jigs). Hope this tiny little bit helps, no further information that I can give to you.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Didn't she play with the London Lasses at one point?

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Indeed a fluteplayer and singer!
In the late 70s and into the 80s I had some great sessions with Siobhan O'Donnell in London. She is a brilliant fluteplayer, having won several competitions and titles, and was a senior adjudicator with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, an organisation dedicated to the promotion and furthering Irish Music, Language and Culture. (They have a comprehensive web site, and branches world wide!)
I do not know of Siobhan's whereabouts now, I live in Tassie, but if you got in touch with Comhaltas I'm sure you would get some useful advice.

Check out this - it's a great album:

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

That link unfortunately doesn't provide a sample of Siobhan playing, except at the end, with everyone else. But the samples provided are nice, nevertheless. However, if you can afford it, do buy this album - it's classic. And guys, do us a favour and do a few lines of a bio about yourselves, yeah?

Danny.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

The above mentioned album is also part of a 4-disc set here: http://www.wyastone.co.uk/nrl/world/1752a.html I don't have all four, only the first one, but they all look very awesome.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Bios? Why do people need bios?

Karen Tweed is a wonderful person. She also happens to be a wonderful musician. Her word alone should be recommendation for anyone who needs to know about another musician.
Siobhan O'Donnell is a wonderful person. She also happens to be a wonderful musician. Is that not enough?

Qualifications, titles, championships do not give status to a person. Certainly, they do give an indication of what might have been achieved, but wouldn't it be nice to know that a person's qualities might be accepted because that's how they are?

Music and people are more than the notes you know!

I'm just a flute player! Music happens to be my mistress!

Be happy!

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Brian, all I was suggesting was if you want to put a few lines about yourself on your details. Just so that the rest of us have an idea who we're talking to. It's just a kind of courtesy, that's all. But don't feel you need to. I entirely agree that music and people are more than just notes, and your other points, and I'm sure the musicians mentioned are lovely people.
And be happy yerself!!

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Brian, I agree with Danny that it can be helpful to add a little extra information. Of course, I would trust Karen Tweed's word but I know who she is. You might be Brian Finnegan for all I know or another guy called Brian who used to come to the local pub and "toot away" very badly. :>))
Probably, you are neither of those people but I agree that your opinion should be perfectly valid regardless of who you are. It's just nice to know a little more about people on the site, though, as we are all agreed, it is not absolutely necessary.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

It has been my great pleasure and honor to know Brian for over ten years now and I can assure you John that he is not the Brian who 'toots away very badly'! Light years from it. However I will leave it up to himself to disclose more about his identity. Come on Brian, don't be shy!

I didn't really think he was for a moment, Paul. :>))

I know you didn't John! I'm just trying to coax Brian out of the shadows!

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

A chairde! (Irish Greeting!)

I was not trying to be reclusive. Believe me! I have visited The Session many times, but felt that there was no need to add anything to points so well debated. The fact that I joined in, is that I felt I had something to offer.

Likewise, when it comes to music...

So, you guys would like to know a bit about me...???

Well, I'm Brian. I play the flute. I AM NOT Brian Finnegan, although I do know him, and have had some great tunes with him.
Another connection there, geographically, is that I come from an Irish family, my father's side being from Rostevor, Co. Down, previously Belfast, and my mother's, Forkhill, Co. Armagh.

My parents' great gift to society was not to encourage a musical career as they felt it was a somewhat insecure form of income!

So, I saw a flute in a shop window and taught myself to play, and have been known as Brian the Flute ever since.

I would not have written, had my great friend, Paul (Moclair), not spoken to, written to, and indeed, emailed from half a world away, asking me to contribute.

Hopefully, this is of use to you wanting a bit of information.

If you'd like to look at

www.hiberniacentre.freeserve.co.uk

you might get an idea of how much I am committed to Traditional Irish Music.

By the way, I did play a few competitions...but that's by the by...

I DO CARE about what you guys discuss!

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Um... I think they meant they wanted you to add some details about yourself *in your member profile* where it will be accessible to everyone simply by clicking on your username.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Thanks for the information, Brian. As Jeremy says, we were just wondering if you could add a little more to your member profile. It's not compulsory but some of us have had "bees in our bonnets" about this sort of thing recently. See this discussion
http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/2562

I think the problem arose because some members had been raising topics which proved a little controversial and we wanted to know a little more about the people who were making the points.
*Not* that there was anything wrong with any of your comments, Brian, and we look forward to hearing much more from you in the future.

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Crikey, never thought I would get such a response! My son is playing a reel called Siobhan O' Donnel's and he wanted some information on the tune. We assumed the reel is named after the composer as so often we forget tune names and associate them with the person. We had never come across a performer of that name. The reel in question is recorded on 'Blazin' Fiddles' first CD, Fire On. All you knowlegable contributors, is this reel written named after it's composer? Great to read your comments. Never thought I would get one comment!

Ooooh...em...dunno that one...duhh..sorry...but put something on yer bio anyway!

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

I'd assume so, but who knows? :) (So much for being knowledgeable!) Apparently she wrote the one Lunasa recorded, according to their notes, if my possibly faulty memory serves long enough. Try writing the BF crew and ask, they probably know...

Re: Siobhan O'Donnell, who is she?

Aye, Zina - reckon you're right on that one. I also remember it as being a cracking tune as well.

Akenatune - It may well be worth getting the Lunasa album - "Lunasa", I haven't heard the Blazin Fiddles CD but it is always interesting to listen to the same tune played by different players. If indeed (as often I've found) it is the same tune! I think in this case it is very likely that it will be though.
