I would like to pick up playing the button accordeon. After reading almost all the posts on beginners instruments, I still don't know what would be a good box to start with. In a shop, I saw a Weltmeister 511 for 695 euros. When I was checking them out on the web, I found way higher prices so I thought it might be a very good deal and it's more or less the most I can afford . Is there anybody out there, that has tried this box? Is it be suitable for irish music? Here's a link: http://www.buttonbox.com/button-accordions.html
Or should I go for a Hohner black dot, or Pokerwork.I saw a Pokerwork tuned B/C for sale for 300 euros I think.
have alook at this : http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php?topic=352.0
but if you can afford it, the Hohner Pokerwork is a good starter !
If you buy second hand boxes, take care of a few things :
- are the bellows leaking ? opne the strapt and just let the belloews go by themselves : they should open very slowly. if they open fast without you doing anything, you'll need good muscles to play...
- is it in tune ?
- is the vibrato the same on every note
- do the keys "clck" loudly when playing (they should be the quietest possible...
- is the action ok : do you need to pull/push hard to get a sound ? it should play without too much effort...
If yer budget will allow, Saltarelle, Irish Boehb is a good mid- rang priced Bosca if you can afford the mid range. It is a good investment as it holds it's value John Williams sells them in the U.S.. Try to get the best your budget allow,as later on, you will regret not going this route. I taught myself on the Saltarelle, and then went to the Kincora, made by Martin Connolly of Ennis, County Clare ,Ir..
Life is good, and the sound of my Kincora is Deadly!!
If I were to buy a new accordion for Irish music in that price bracket, the 511 would be very appealing to me. I have never played a 511 but I have heard very good things, and the little brother 86W is an excellent box. Over a Black Dot you have the advantage of an additional set of reeds, and the prices are comparable. The Chinese Hohners have been improving, but they're still sub-par, in my opinion.
If you order new from the Button Box, be sure that they don't ship it without tuning it, first. New instruments coming from a dealer should always be in top playing condition. It should not be out of tune when it arrives, under any circumstances.
Thanks for all the replies! It now all comes down if I can get rid of my guitar, to get the nessecary euros. If I sell it I'll probably go for the Weltmeister, if not I'll go for the Pokerwork or Blackdot. I'm definately going to visit the Accordeontheek in Alkmaar( Holland). See what advice they can give me.
Thanks again everybody!
I think you should go over and review some of the posts regarding this subject over at Melodeon.net Very nice folks super knowledgeable abd willing to help. There are even some great deals to be had on boxes from the buy and sell forum there.

Re: Weltmeister 511 B/C
second hand is always risky for a beginner but if the B/C pokerwork is sound you'll be ok. I bought one and I love it.
if your budget will stretch you should be able to get a new pokerwork for £uk500, a black dot for about £uk600 and a Morgane for £uk750
the morgane is superior to either black dot or pokerwork for a beginner
