Winter has come early to Britain this year - snow almost everywhere, thick and heavy and reducing whole regions to a standstill.
How's it affecting your sessions ?
I know people from Canada and the Northern US of A laugh at our helplessness in the face of these conditions, but we just don't get enough of it normally to justify shelling out on all the public vehicles to clear the roads and the traintracks, and the snowchains and stuff for our own vehicles.
We had a guy from Vermont listening to our session this week, playing down our embarrassement at the inadequacies of the British winter infrastructure. Meanwhile one of our Sacred-Harp-singing friends isn't going to try to get from South Croydon to our North London sing on Sunday, and has already had to miss a Maddy Prior and Carnival Band concert in Tunbridge Wells because there was no hope of getting there, let alone returning.
Also a charity gig I would have been depping in a friends band for on Saturday, also South near the M25, has been cancelled.
Is this why we are always talking about the weather ?
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
Back in 1947 we had a winter far worse than any we have had since. We got snow and freezing temperatures from mid November through until early June. Sheffeild transport stuck snow ploughs on front of their tramcars and all the routes were kept clear. I was a young boy at the time and enjoyed every minute of it but sadly none of the schools closed and I never missed a day. The worst that happened was a few power cuts due to the new fangled electric fires being turned on in an effort fo keep warm. If they could cope then 63 years ago just a couple of years after world war 2 why for Gods sake can't they cope now.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
Bernie, I wasn't there so I can't say, but do you suppose it might be that after having been through a war of that magnitude, people might have felt like stopping things for the snow would have been letting down the side a little?
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
Our sessions last night was very small and the pub was pretty quiet. Had some lovely tunes though, which you could actually hear, unlike a normal Wednesday. More snow please.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
I think they coped then because nobody relied on motor vehicles to get around. That's the problem now, I think: everyone needs a car to get to work. Schools close because the roads are blocked and the teachers can't get in; it's not the kids. I was born in 1947 so I missed the fun; but I know used to walk to school in the snow, later to college and then to work, and whenever there was a session I walked to that (a little bit further coming back, usually.)
I'll tell you what the cold weather is affecting now mind: my fiddle is freezing and so are my fingers.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
I went for an 8-mile walk on Sunday, wrapped in as many layers as I could get on. Within half an hour of walking, I was cooking. I called in at a friends house en route, where I was given a bowl of hot soup and got to sit by the fire and thaw my snow-caked trouser cuffs. By the time I left, the light was fading and the temperature plummeting. I could feel my breath freezing onto by facial hair - and my wet trouser cuffs were rigid within minutes.
Back home, a quick change of clothes and I was off to a session. I suppose the weather did affect the session, inasmuch as a few people from out of town didn't turn up because they were either unable to get there or nervous to drive on the icy roads.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
>>Schools close because the roads are blocked and the teachers can't get in; it's not the kids.
Yep, that's part of it. Tomorrow will be the fourth day we have been closed. On Tuesday, my usual 30 miles to school took almost two treacherous hours, and just before I arrived they sent a text saying it was closed, so I had to turn round and come home again. Blame it on house prices in the South East. But it's also down to having enough teachers to supervise the pupils and indeed enough pupils to make it worth teaching them - plenty of parents just keep their kids off anyway these days. In the past, they just coralled us all in the hall and we did nothing useful all day in any case.
So in between getting a lot of work done at home, I've been making some new recordings, learning some new tunes and getting ready for Sunday's house session - always assuming that anyone will make it through the snow... So highly productive I would say.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
Nah. Bernie's right. People give up too easily these days. People have basically got lazy. We could do with something like a war. But without the bloodshed. I've been wondering if, when people get used to the idea that the phoney economic bananza of the first decade of the new century is not coming back, they'll knuckle down and get a bit more spirit and life into them. There's been a culture of taking 'sickies', of having 'duvet days' and generally of not making an effort. It's time for all that to stop.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
Certainly, without cars, people worked much more locally. My partner now has an 8-mile drive or thereabouts across North London to get to her school; public transport would take at least 50% longer, on crowded tubes and the North London Line, plus she'd have to carry any prepared work with her, instead of popping it in the boot.
Meanwhile, my daughter, after two preplanned days off work, returned to her job at The Open University; in front of the offices is a large swathe of grass, currently snow-covered, all morning she was staring at it, thinking "Snowman, snowman, snowman." "No, I can't everybody will be watching me. "

The fabled Herself is a teacher. I can appreciate your comment. Problem is there's no support anywhere- neither adminstration or parents. And some parents are just plain goofy.
There are days I feel like the Teacher's Husband in the bar in 'It's a wonderful life'. After Herselfs returns to some kind of reasonable after a bizarro incident, there are days I would like to find the cuplprit and pop them....figuratively speaking of course.
Few people realize what a tough way teaching is to make a living.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
"It doesn't snow everywhere in Canada. It's a pretty big spot of land so you can't assume it has one weather pattern because of stereotypes."
That's interesting, Tasia. I know it's a big country and all that, and I'm aware that, for example, the Vancouver area is much wetter and milder than other parts; but I would have assumed, because of its latitude, that there would be some snow everywhere in Canada. In the places where it doesn't snow, is it because it's too warm, too cold or too dry, or (almost) any combination thereof?
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
The weather this year is nothing compared to the 'night of the big snow' in 1876. I walked all the way in a blizzard from Glenties to Carrick to play at a session. I, myself was none the worse for wear, but had leave my fiddle beside the fire for 37 minuted to defrost it. I remember well the great session that was in it on the the night of the big snow. Unfortunately when the session finished at eight o'clock the following morning, there were snow drifts up to twice the height of yearling heifer, preventing my returning to the Glenties. Fortunately I found solace in the arms of the publican's daughter for the following week until the snow thawed. It is well I remember the fine setting she had at her of the sporting paddy. That is the time that was in it then, even if it was long ago.
Re: How's the funny weather affecting your session ?
"This term is Stress City for most teachers and the chance for a few days' impromptu breather is only too welcome."
All of your post, Ian Stock, was typical modern whingeing and exactly what I'm talking about. People don't see any problem with trying to find any way they can to get out of doing what they're paid to do. Anyway, teaching's only a part-time job in any case.

It doesn't snow everywhere in Canada. It's a pretty big spot of land so you can't assume it has one weather pattern because of stereotypes.
